The Pittsburgh Steelers looked kind of clumsy and disorganized on defense as they opened their season against the very capable defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots. One of the things that was rather surprising about Pittsburgh’s performance last Thursday was the fact that they were able to move the football on the ground in the absence of Le’veon Bell, who is still serving his suspension that stemmed from a marijuana arrest a year ago. DeAngelo Williams, who played with Carolina last season, stepped in and ran for 127 yards. This was important, and he really does not have to do the same kind of thing here to open up opportunities for Ben Roethlisberger in the passing game. Big Ben had 351 yards through the air, and this might be the situation where San Francisco’s attrition on defense may be exposed. And by the same token, Colin Kaepernick is not as artful a passer as Brady, so he won’t be able to exploit weaknesses in the Pittsburgh secondary as easily.
