Rex Ryan’s “Era” with Bills Begins as Home Dog vs. Colts
By Charles Jay
The Indianapolis Colts had a good season in 2014, despite getting slapped around a little by the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game. And they tried a couple of moves in the off-season to take that next step toward reaching the Super Bowl. On Sunday they will begin the season against the Buffalo Bills, who are playing for the first time in the regular season for new head coach Rex Ryan. Game times is 1 PM ET at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, NY. Week 1 NFL Betting Preview – Bills vs Colts
In the NFL betting odds posted on this game by the people at Vietbet, the Colts are favored on the road:
- Indianapolis Colts -3
- Buffalo Bills +3
- Over 45 points -110
- Under 45 points -110
The Bills are in a relatively strange position, because they actually posted a winning record last year (9-7), almost making the playoffs, but lost their head coach, Doug Marrone, who decided to opt out of his contract when relationships with management got a little too tense. Ryan brings his own brand of tension, but he has the ability to come in and shake things up.
Does that need to happen? Not on defense; they were fourth in the league in that category last season. Jim Schwartz, who was the coordinator of that unit, is gone, and Ryan replaced him with Dennis Thurman.
The game plan on offense is to pound the ball with a running attack, and the Bills couldn’t have found many better people to add than LeSean McCoy, who just couldn’t get along with Chip Kelly in Philadelphia but represents the genuine go-to back this team had been missing. The problem is that he will be slowed down with a hamstring problem, and he is almost certainly less than 100%, perhaps considerably less.
And Ryan, who went out and got a veteran to “manage” the offense with the acquisition of Matt Cassel, has reversed field there. Last season Marrone brought aboard Kyle Orton and the results were not bad. Then Orton retired. But Cassel is not starting here; and it isn’t because EJ Manuel now has some command of the offense. Apparently Tyrod Taylor has impressed enough to get the starting job, as Ryan likes his mobility.
Vietbet patrons know there is some more stability with the Colts. Andrew Luck is coming off a season where he threw 40 touchdown passes and accumulated 4761 yards. And he did that without any running game to speak of. But now the Indy management believes it has addressed that issue. Frank Gore has been a perennial 1000-yard rusher with San Francisco, and the only question is whether he will hit the wall before the Colts can get a good season or two out of him.
The same goes for Andre Johnson, the long-time Houston Texans’ star who was told his role would be a little different and asked for his release. So here he is as a third receiver. The first receiver is TY Hilton, who should stretch the field enough once again (had 1345 yards and 16.4 per catch).
