The New York Jets had their fill of Rex Ryan and finally let the bombastic head coach go at the end of last season. In steps Todd Bowles, the former defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals, who is hoping to bring added toughness to the defense and also some improvement out of third-year quarterback Geno Smith. The Jets begin their season with a matchup against the Cleveland Browns, who might just have last year’s rookie meltdown, Johnny Manziel, behind center as pro football betting action gets underway at 1 PM ET on Sunday, September 13 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.

Perhaps Ryan had his fate decided when his team lost eight straight games after the season-opening win over the Oakland Raiders. Smith did not show a lot of leadership, and did not exhibit much in the way of effective performance on the field either, with 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. The defense allowed 25 points per game, despite being ranked sixth in the NFL in yards allowed.
Things looked promising for the Browns last season, as Brian Hoyer got the starting nod over Heisman Trophy winner Manziel, and Cleveland was 6-3 after nine games. But then the roof fell in. When Hoyer wasn’t turning the ball over, he was injured, and Manziel looked like a deer in the headlights when he got his starting opportunity. The final tally was 7-9 in Mike Pettine’s maiden voyage as head coach.
Manziel spent some time in a rehab facility in the off-season, and coaches were encouraged by his attitude and his ability to adapt to the offense during early drills. But the Browns have an insurance policy nonetheless, as they signed Josh McCown, a veteran who had a great year with Chicago Bears two seasons ago, to replace Hoyer, who departed as a free agent. And this team seemed to make a concerted effort to beef up the receiving corps, as Dwayne Bowe, who was with Kansas City last season, and Brian Hartline, who was with the Dolphins, have arrived. Unfortunately, Josh Gordon will be missing, as he was found to be violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy, and he remains a big absence, since he was the 2013 NFL leader in receiving. As usual, Cleveland has an uncertainty in the backfield, where they still seek a go-to runner.
Things reached a new low for the Jets last season, Vietbet patrons probably recall when Smith missed the final team meeting before game with the San Diego Chargers. That came before a humiliating 31-0 defeat, but Smith continues to be given opportunities, even though his “patron saint,” John Idzik, was fired as general manager. Bowles, who resurrected himself in Arizona, has already indicated Smith would be the starter at quarterback, even though veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick is also on the roster. They will get help from Brandon Marshall, acquired in a trade with Chicago, and on defense, New York welcomes back cornerbacks Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie. But Sheldon Richardson, on a substance-abuse suspension, will not be available for this game, and it won’t be easy to lose one of the better defensive linemen in the NFL.
