Steelers vs Saints Odds – CJ’s Take
Yes, Pittsburgh came up with enough defense to turn back New England last weekend, even though Ben Roethlisberger did not have a great day, throwing for just 235 yards. What happened was that they got a surprising effort out of rookie running back Jaylen Samuels, who ran for 142 yards in place of James Conner, who was recently voted to the Pro Bowl. Now Conner his back and ready for action, which we suppose means that Pittsburgh now has some depth that the running back spot.
And when you talk about running backs, the New Orleans duo of Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram has to be included among the best in the league. Ingram lost some time at the beginning because of the suspension, but he has now racked up 582 yards with 4.8 yards per carry. Kamara has 1487 combined rushing-receiving yards and has scored 16 touchdowns.
Naturally, when you talk about the Saints, you got to mention that Drew Brees is 75% accurate with 31 touchdowns, just five interceptions and 15 sacks. So this offense is not going to beat itself a lot.
One of the things we have to stress once again about the Saints is the way they play defense. They put pressure on the quarterback (45 sacks), stop most opposition ground attacks (3.7 yards per carry allowed), and have kept teams off the scoreboard lately. In fact, when you add up the totals for opponents over the last six weeks, they’ve allowed only 74 points. You can’t get a whole lot better than that. And they were playing against some capable quarterbacks in those games.
So it’s really going to be up to Ben Roethlisberger to take advantage of both of his wideouts and stretch this Saints secondary. He’s got two receivers who have topped 1000 yards for the season – Jiju Smith-Schuster and Antonio Brown – and if they get that rushing component, from either James Conner or Jaylen Samuels, they might be able to make a game of it. However, the Saints, who have struggled the last three weeks, might be a lot more interested in taking their offense out for a ride on the fast track at home. There is a big difference in turnover margin here as well, has New Orleans is +8, while the Steelers are minus-9. Still, it would kind of like to go with the UNDER in this one, because we have some faith in Pittsburgh’s stop unit, but a lot of faith in what New Orleans can do.
