But he looked like he was really cooking last time out, having the kind of game that was reminiscent of his outstanding 2016 campaign. Cousins, who threw for 4917 yards last season, has had to work with Matt Cavanaugh, who replaced Sean McVay in the coordinator position. Cousins and McVay had a special rapport, and on top of that the Redskins have had to use new people in key wide receiver positions. One of those is Josh Doctson, last year’s top draft choice, who only had two catches last season in an injury-riddled campaign, but has spectacular 52-yard touchdown catch against the Oakland Raiders last week, in a game the Redskins dominated much more than the 27-10 final score indicated.
The story of the Chiefs’ season is that some genuine weapons have emerged. One of those is rookie running back Kareem Hunt, who has made a lot of big plays already. He’s got 401 rushing yards, combined with 137 through receptions, and he had 172 yards on the ground against the Los Angeles Chargers last week in a 24-10 victory. There was a lot of concern in training camp when Spencer Ware, last year’s leading rusher by a wide margin, went down with the season-ending injury. But things are even more hopeful than they were before, now that Hunt has taken over. If there is any concern whatsoever, it’s that Kansas City can’t really give him much of a rest, because the next leading running back has only 20 yards.
