Raiders vs Buccaneers – CJ’s Take:

Good teams can figure out a way to win on the road, and the Raiders have done just that. In fact, they have won all four as the visitor, including a 33-16 victory over Jacksonville last Sunday. When you consider they have also triumphed at New Orleans, Tennessee and Baltimore, they haven’t really defeated a top-shelf outfit. But Tampa Bay, frankly, doesn’t fit that description either.

And it is customary for teams based on the west coast to have difficulties with their body clock when they play an early game. Oakland has not tripped up with that yet, and on top of that, they went straight to Sarasota after the game with the Jags and have stayed in Florida all week.

The Bucs have put together back-to-back victories, before and after their bye week. They have been playing without running back Doug Martin, but have been getting pretty good service out of Jacquizz Rodgers, which has been a nice surprise. Meanwhile, the Raiders got back Latavius Murray last week, and that has bolstered their “committee” at the running back spot.

Martin has had problems recovering from a hamstring injury, but with Rodgers in the fold, they hardly miss him, or so it seems. In these last two wins he has run for 2 yards, and he is averaging 4.7 yards a carry, which is more than solid. One thing Tampa Bay does not want to do if they can help it is allow for opposing defenses to tee off in Jameis Winston, who can be forced into mistakes. He has turned the ball over eleven times so far (nine interceptions, two fumbles).

Derek Carr has taken much better care of the ball (three INT’s in 264 attempts). The third-year man out of Fresno State has also managed to avoid other catastrophic plays like sacks, as he has suffered only seven of them this season. Amari Cooper is up to 614 receiving yards. The Raiders almost have to perform at peak efficiency on offense every game because their defense has holes. When you give up 8.2 yards per pass play and five yards a rush, you find yourself having to trade points more often than you would like. In fact, in terms of yards allowed per drive, they are 29th in the league.

VietBet patrons know that as bad as a defense can be, if you can get the edge in turnovers you can win games. And the Silver & Black has turned the ball over just five times. And the philosophy might be that if they can continue to keep the pressure on the Bucs’ offense, sooner or later Winston is going to make a mistake.

On the other hand, Bucs’ coach Dirk Koetter saw a weakness last week, and he did not hesitate to exploit it. He knew that the San Francisco 49ers had a soft defensive front, which is softer without injured linebacker NoVorro Bowman. And they continued to run the ball with Rodgers and rookie Peyton Barber because no one could really stop them. You might be able to make a similar observation about the Raiders, and if Tampa Bay gets something going on the ground, they won’t have to undertake things that are so risky.

Next Up for both teams:

  • Oakland home to Denver Sunday, November 6
  • Tampa Bay home to Atlanta Thursday, November 3
