Lions vs Giants – CJ’s Take:
The Lions continue to come back in games, and have done so in eight of their nine victories, with a have been trailing in the fourth quarter. That is obviously a testament to quarterback Matthew Stafford, who has been gaining some MVP consideration with 3447 yards. But he recently injured the middle finger of his throwing hand, and the club has been going over possible remedies that will help him throw the ball without hindrance. He was intercepted twice (including a pick six) and missed receivers on several occasions against the Chicago Bears last week, though he did lead his team on a late touchdown drive to eke out a 20-17 victory. While Minnesota has faded, Detroit has taken over the NFC North, with a two-game lead over the Vikings and the Green Bay Packers, another team that is coming on strong. So right now Detroit’s big concern might be locking up the #2 seed in the conference for the upcoming playoffs.
The Giants are coming off an extremely satisfying victory over the Dallas Cowboys, in which defense carried the day. The 10-7 victory featured a lot of harassment of Dak Prescott and brought their sack total over the past four games to 16. The Giants are 9-4, and it is conceivable that they can win the NFC East, since they own a tie-breaker edge over the Cowboys. But even if they don’t get there, they are in pretty good playoff position. A loss here, however, could adjust that a little.
In the off-season, management of the team decided to put some money into revamping the defensive unit, which was last in the NFL in 2015. The results have been rather astonishing – the Giants are one of a select number of teams to have held the opposition under 60% completions and have allowed only 13 touchdown passes in 13 games. They have also limited the opposition to 3.6 yards per carry and 35.5% on third down. So they are certainly in the upper reaches as far as stop units in the league.
Now the question is what they can get accomplished on offense. Eli Manning is always going to produce some numbers, but with 13 interceptions, he can also help the opposition flip the field. The Giants, on an overall basis, have not run the ball well (only 3.4 yards per carry for the season), and that has really hurt them in down-and-distance situations. This team converts only 32% of its third downs, and that can present a rough situation for them against this Detroit team, especially if Stafford can throw the ball without any impediment.
