Jets Continue to Have Confidence in Geno Smith
By Charles Jay
On Sunday afternoon, the New York Jets will tangle with the San Diego Chargers at Qualcomm Stadium in a 4:25 PM ET start. In the NFL betting picks posted at VietBet on this one, the Chargers are laying some points:
San Diego Chargers -6.5 (-115), New York Jets +6.5 (-105)
Over 43.5 Points -110, Under 43.5 Points -110
VietBet patrons have seen that the Buffalo Bills are making the move to Kyle Orton after benching second-year pro EJ Manuel. But the New York Jets don’t seem to be harboring such thoughts, as they continue to express confidence in Geno Smith, who was taken in the second round of last year’s NFL Draft.
Smith, who threw 21 interceptions last year, is one pace to get close to that figure again. And he is committing those turnovers at particularly inopportune times. The Jets have simply not generated enough, or played a full 60 minutes of football, in any of the last three games. What had to be especially galling was the way they blew a 21-3 lead against the Green Bay Packers in the season’s second week.
As we make our NFL picks, we have to consider that Jets management, even after reaching out in the off-season to acquire Michael Vick, is absolutely committed to developing Smith, come hell or high water. At least that is what the anthem is at the moment.
To a lot of people, including members of the media both in the New York area and across the nation, the situation with Smith looks an awful lot like what the Jets went through with Mark Sanchez, who never quite became an upper-level NFL quarterback. But in Rex Ryan’s first couple of years at the helm, the Jets had an imposing running game and defense to make up for it.
Certainly those making NFL picks this week know that New York is capable on the defensive line (allowing just three yards a carry) and can move it on the ground with the likes of Chris Ivory, who has logged 5.5 yards an attempt, but VietBet patrons know that this team has to get lucky with its pass rush in order to make up for a secondary that is very permeable. The Jets have permitted nine TD passes and not picked off a pass through four games, which makes them look like a perfect match for San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers, who has great numbers in the early going (70%, nine TD’s, one INT).
Anyone looking at this game from an NFL betting standpoint knows it is not likely that Smith can engage in a shootout with Rivers and survive. The Chargers are just too crisp on offense. And the Jets ace some uncertainty with game-time decision on receivers Eric Decker and David Nelson. But folks wagering at VietBet need to consider that the Chargers, who have had some problems on center-quarterback exchanges since losing Nick Hardwick, may have to go with the #3 center this week (Doug Legursky), and that may be something the Jets can exploit with their educated front seven.
VietBet is most definitely your headquarters when it comes to extras for the sports bettor, including great free play bonuses, reduced juice on NFL games and the quickest payouts in the industry!
