Patriots vs Jets – Week 16 NFL Preview
By Charles Jay
The New England Patriots are very aggressively going after the home-field advantage in the AFC playoffs, and between either of the next two games, easily the most winnable is Sunday’s encounter with the New York Jets, although it may not have looked that way when these teams met previously. NFL betting action is scheduled to take place at 1 PM ET at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.
As all Vietbet customers know by now, the Patriots had a rather inauspicious start, losing two of their first four games, with that second defeat a genuine humiliation at the hands of the Kansas City Chiefs (41-14). Then they went on a seven-game winning streak, beating four teams who will most likely be in the playoffs. The only game during that stretch that was close was against the Jets, who gave them a lot of anxiety at Gillette Stadium before finally succumbing to a 27-25 defeat. In that ballgame, the Jets did exactly what they really like to do on offense, which is to pound the football, as they shredded New England’s defensive front for 218 rushing yards.
New England is 11-3 straight-up and 9-5 against the football pointspread. New York is 3-11 straight-up and 5-9 versus the points. So you could actually put each teams records in front of a mirror and the other team’s record would reflect back. Clever, huh?
In the NFL betting odds that have been posted on this game by the people at Vietbet, the Patriots are double-digit favorites on the road:
New England Patriots -10.5
New York Jets +10.5
Over 46.5 points -110
Under 46.5 points -110
Believe it or not, the Jets won a football game last week. They defeated the Tennessee Titans 16-11, and the much-maligned Geno Smith went without a turnover, which is actually something surprising to most people. In a sense, that victory was self-defeating, as the Jets may have taken themselves out of the running for the #1 pick in the NFL draft, which is expected to be Oregon’s Heisman Trophy winner, Marcus Mariota. And we certanly know they aren’t “all-in” with Smith at this point.
Vietbet patrons know that coach Rex Ryan isn’t thinking in those terms anyway. Frankly, there is much doubt among NFL bettors and everybody else as to whether he’s even going to be around next season. But he may have been under a directive from management that he put Smith back into the lineup after he had benched him in favor of veteran Michael Vick.
To be perfectly honest (and NFL bettors know this full well), the Jets have been more competitive since the second-year pro out of West Virginia returned to the lineup. They should have beaten the Miami Dolphins at home, but couldn’t get the job done in the red zone and went down to a 16-13 loss. Then it took a couple of turnovers for touchdowns on the part of the Minnesota Vikings to even force overtime, where the Jets lost 30-24. And then there was the victory over Tennessee, which came into the game, and left it, with only two wins.
Over the last three meetings between these teams, the Jets have lost by a total of eight points. So it should not be surprising to the Vietbet audience at all if they battled the Patriots till the end. Remember that there is a lot of pent-up animosity between Ryan and New England coach Bill Belichick, although it appears that Rex will not have a chance to even up his career record against Belichick (he is 4-8 straight-up right now). Simply put, the Jets are going to try to run the football, and New England is going to try to stop it. That’s pretty much the whole game in a nutshell.
