Grizzlies Stuck For Answers If Allen Not Up to Par

By Charles Jay

Well, the offensive woes of the Memphis Grizzlies continued on Wednesday night as they played Game 5 of their Western Conference playoffs semi-finals against the Golden State Warriors. This team has had a hard time finding the hoop, and this time it extended to the people who are supposed to do the best work for this team on the inside. Are there solutions for the Grizzlies, against a team that led the NBA in defensive field-goal percentage? That is what Vietbet customers will be watching out for as these teams do battle in NBA playoff action in Friday night’s Game 6, scheduled for 9:35 PM ET at the FedEx Forum in Memphis. This is the game where the Grizzlies have to win to force a seventh game back in Oakland.

In the second and third games of this series, Golden State found much frustration shooting from the outside, as the Splash Brothers, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, combined to hit only 24% of their three-point attempts. But since then things have loosened up, and it is no coincidence that it has happened while Tony Allen has been hobbled. One of the NBA’s genuine defensive aces has been dealing with a bad hamstring, and his absence really creates a hole in the Grizzlies’ defensive scheme.

In the NBA playoff betting odds that have been posted on this game by the folks at Vietbet, Golden State is laying points on the road as they tried to end the series:

Golden State Warriors -5
Memphis Grizzlies +5

Over 193.5 points -110
Under 193.5 points -110

Allen only played 16 minutes in Game 4 before having to leave. He was something of an offensive liability, as Golden State’s defense was playing “off” him and daring him to shoot. At some point, as Memphis coach Dave Joerger admitted, this team needed to score points, so it was difficult to gauge how long Allen could stay in the game as his team had to play catch-up. But when he is not out there hounding the Warriors’ outside shooters, they have a much easier time of it. As Allen missed Game 5 altogether, you could see the residual effect – Curry and Thompson combined to hit nine out of their 17 attempts from downtown.

Meanwhile, Memphis couldn’t seem to hit the side of a barn, even if it was close enough to knock on the door. Some Vietbet patrons might have been shocked at their lack of accuracy in the paint, as they made just 15 out of their 42 shot attempts. And when Memphis has to shoot from the outside, they open themselves up for trouble. They were just 4-15 from three-point range, and they could not even win the battle on the boards.

The interesting thing about all this is that the Grizzlies are actually forcing the kind of pace that is to their liking. Golden State averaged 110 points during the regular season, but managed only 98 on Wednesday. However, they still won it by 20 points. That doesn’t leave Memphis with a whole lot of answers, and so Allen is going to try to play, as long as his hamstring allows him to walk. If they are going to do it – that is, extend this series the seven games – the Grizzlies are going to have to do it with defense.
