Redskins Need to Straighten Out For Date with Seahawks
By Charles Jay
Will the real Washington Redskins please stand up? Are they the same team that destroyed the Jacksonville Jaguars in their home debut? Or are they the team that could not seem to hold onto the ball, laying down and rolling over for the New York Giants a week ago Thursday? This team hopes to provide positive answers as they try to beat the Monday night football odds, but they are running into the defending champion Seattle Seahawks, in an 8:30 PM ET kickoff at FedEx Field in Landover, MD.
In the MNF Betting odds that are posted at VietBet on this game, the Seahawks are favored by a touchdown:
Seattle Seahawks -7 (-115)
Washington Redskins +7 (-105)
Over 45 Points -110, Under 45 Points -110
It has been a tough ten days or so for the Redskins. Not only did they get beat 45-14 by the Giants in a CBS-televised stand-alone game, they also got word that the FCC was considering a special interest petition to ban their nickname from the airwaves. So there is no comfort anywhere.
Kirk Cousins, who has appeared to be somewhat at ease in Jay Gruden’s version of the West Coast offense, threw four interceptions over a period of five possessions in that fateful Thursday night game, allowing the floodgates to bust wide open. And naturally, there are some doubts among Redskins fans and NFL bettors about what he can accomplish from this point.
Any discussion of Washington for this game must include a review of some of the Redskins’ injuries. Left tackle Trent Williams has been limited in practice because of his bad knee. The same can be said about tight ends Niles Paul, who suffered a concussion against the Giants, and Jordan Reed, who has been dealing with a bad hamstring ever since the season opener. Considering that Williams is the point man for protection of Cousins, and Paul leads the team in receiving yards, these are significant injuries indeed. For the information of VietBet customers, they all are very hopeful of being able to play on Monday night.
If Paul can’t play, does that limit Cousins’ options? Sure it does. And what might compound things is if Richard Sherman is able to blanket DeSean Jackson the way Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie of the Giants, who held him to one catch, was able to do. Of course, there is another genuine threat in Pierre Garcon, but Seattle has one of the league’s most feared secondaries, although Monday night football bettors will find that they have indeed allowed opponents to complete 69% of their passes.
The ideal plan for Washington would involve controlling the ball on the ground. And they certainly have an appropriate guy to do it with in Alfred Morris (316 yards, 4.5 yards an attempt). But the Seahawks, who are the +460 favorites to win the Super Bowl at VietBet, are very tough against the run, allowing just 2.8 yards a pop. If you’re a football bettor, you might be interested to know that Russell Wilson, the Seattle quarterback, has just a 9-8 straight-up career record in road games. So unless Cousins starts coughing it up again, this might not be a cakewalk.
