Colts vs Raiders Odds – CJ’s Take
The Colts had to deal only with Derek Anderson last week, and the veteran, who had just recently arrived, was not necessarily operating with the whole playbook. That created something of an advantage in what turned out to be a 37-5 victory. In that game, Andrew Luck threw for only 156 yards, but he really didn’t need to have a big day through the air. The Colts had 220 yards on the ground, and that might be a significant factor here, with the Raiders allowing 4.7 yards per carry.
Oakland had a bye last week, as they came back from a 27-3 defeat to the Seattle Seahawks in London. Over the last two games, they have scored just one touchdown, and their only victory came in overtime against the Cleveland Browns, where the majority of observers were of the opinion that they benefited from some calls by the officials.
On the injury front, Marshawn Lynch will not play in this game to a groin injury, and that creates a dilemma, since the Raiders don’t have any other running back with more than 99 yards. There was also a trade this week, as wide receiver Amari Cooper was dealt to the Dallas Cowboys. So you get the distinct impression that Oakland is trying to purge players and go through the “rebuild.” Indeed, this seems to be in keeping with some of the rumors that had coach Jon Gruden, who is very much in control, was not very happy with the roster he saw when he took over, and is now going to assert some domain over the personnel.
Luck has 20 touchdown passes already, which puts him on track to have more than 40 by the end of the season. And Indianapolis has passed the ball almost twice as many times at it as it has run, but with Marlon Mack running for 126 yards last week, we can see that kind of thing changing. Indeed, Luck had 23 pass attempts last week against Buffalo, while the Colts had 37 rushing plays.
Yes, that’s a good thing. And that’s probably one of the reasons why the Colts have drawn interest from those challenging the NFL odds. But we would caution people writing off Derek Carr, for example, that Indianapolis has allowed some high percentage passing (yielding 72% completions), so perhaps the Raiders can get a little of that West Coast offense going. The most important thing will be to keep the Indianapolis pass rush out of the Oakland backfield. The Raiders used to have one of the best offensive lines in the NFL, but they have been in decline.
