Kentucky Needs Confidence to Keep Pace with #1 Ranked Mississippi State
By Charles Jay
Sure, it’s been highly unlikely that the Mississippi State Bulldogs have risen to the #1 spot in both major polls, but you can’t say that they haven’t earned it; that is, unless you are a Florida State fan.
The Bulldogs seem on a collision course with a showdown against Ole Miss, ranked third in the country, in what would be the most meaningful “Egg Bowl” ever. On Saturday they take the field against the Kentucky Wildcats in college football betting action that is set to begin at 3:30 PM ET at Commonwealth Stadium in Lexington.
MSU did not get a lot of consideration at the beginning of the season, but they scored consecutive wins over LSU, Texas A&M and Auburn, all of whom were in the top ten, to vault itself to the top. Certainly LSU and A&M have proven not to be top ten-caliber teams. And FSU has since beaten Notre Dame, hence the argument for the Seminoles. Of course, with a four-team playoff, which will be in effect for the first time this season, arguments will generally get settled.
Vietbet College Football Betting Line: Mississippi State vs Kentucky
In the college football betting odds that have been established at VietBet on this game, the Bulldogs are big favorites on the road:
- Mississippi State Bulldogs -14.5, Kentucky Wildcats +14.5
- Over/Under 58.5 Points -110
Kentucky has made progress under Mark Stoops; that much is certain. The Wildcats defeated South Carolina a few weeks ago, and had taken Florida, which it never beats, into overtime before losing a few weeks before that. But going into Baton Rouge and on the verge of registering itself a national ranking, Kentucky was simply blown out of the stadium by LSU by a 41-3 count.
Quarterback Patrick Towles struggled with a 19-36, 146-yard effort, and that was the good part. The ‘Cats wound up with just 217 total yards, and they found it completely impossible to stop a deep LSU running game that didn’t even need a lot of production from freshman Leonard Fournette.
This week they have to deal with Dak Prescott, a dual–threat quarterback who is so highly regarded at the moment that he is priced at +200 to win the Heisman Trophy in the football futures odds at VietBet, with only Marcus Mariota in front of him on that list.
Prescott does not necessarily have a lot of stats that dazzle; in fact, he has yet to throw for 300 yards, But he is been very accurate (61.5%) and has made his throws count (9.5 yards per attempt). He has also tossed just four interceptions, and has added 5875 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground. All told, he has just been a great field general and cool under pressure against these highly-ranked opponents.
And his team has performed very well against the college football betting lines, covering ten of their last eleven games overall.
The questions surrounding Kentucky involve whether this team, which was exuding so much confidence, can recapture it after being so completely dominated by a quality SEC foe. This week they face an opponent that has had an extra week to prepare (and celebrate after beating Auburn, we might add), and which has a QB who can both pass AND run much better than Anthony Jennings of LSU.
