Chiefs vs Browns Odds – CJ’s Take
The Chiefs come into this game with a 7-1 record, both straight-up and against the points, and they had a closer call than expected last week as they beat the Denver Broncos 30-23 at home. Nonetheless, Patrick Mahomes is establishing himself as a prime MVP candidate in his first year as a starter. Mahomes has completed 65.6% of his passes for almost nine yards per attempt, and he has 26 touchdowns, which projects him to have more than 50 by season’s end. Truly sensational.
The situation became untenable in Cleveland, with infighting and attempts at sabotage going on between Jackson and Haley. Management decided that rather than come to a conclusion as to whether to keep one or the other, they would just fire both. And that’s exactly what happened. Really, the major consideration was the development of rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield, the #1 overall draft pick, since both Jackson and Haley consider themselves to be offensive “gurus.” Now, defensive coordinator Gregg Williams takes over as interim head coach, while Freddie Hitchens will make the play calls on offense.
Lots of public money came in on the Chiefs, and there has to be an evaluation as to whether the Browns’ situation has collapsed, or is it now better overall because some of the tension has been relieved? You have to consider that on defense, Cleveland has not been bad against opposing passing attacks; in fact, they are arguably one of the very best in the NFL, holding quarterbacks just under 60% completions with 12 interceptions. Cleveland has allowed the lowest average passer rating (77.1) in the NFL this season. So yes, they can get it done on that side, and that is what the aforementioned Williams was responsible for. A matchup to watch here is rookie corner Denzel Ward against the explosive Tyreek Hill, as you could see both of those players in the Pro Bowl at the end of the season. That is, unless the Chiefs go on to the Super Bowl, which looks very much like a possibility.
Another interesting proposition is whether the Browns can do some business against this Kansas City defense, which gives opponents a chance to establish a ground game, allowing 5.4 yards per rushing attempt. Cleveland, which has committed itself to rookie running back Nick Chubb (6.1 yards per carry), might take their chances in playing some ball control, and this will give Mayfield a better chance to operate as well. But the Chiefs have an opportunity to get a pass rush on here, as Cleveland has surrendered 33 quarterback sacks. Also, the Browns are just 31.2% successful on third down conversions. So the offensive concept, whether it was Haley or Jackson, or both, contributing to it, has not exactly been super-charged.
Still, because of their defense, we see some value with the Cleveland side in this one.
