Chargers vs Steelers Odds – CJ’s Take

Yes, there are a few quarterbacks around the league who are getting more headlines, like Patrick Mahomes and Drew Brees, but Philip Rivers has brought some huge “game” together for the Bolts this season. Rivers is almost 70% accurate, with his average over nine yards per attempt and a brilliant 26-6 touchdown-interception ratio. Keenan Allen (848 yards) is one of the more underrated receivers in the NFL, and Los Angeles has gotten some surprising contributions out of future Hall of Fame tight end Antonio Gates, who was signed right before the regular season started.

The Chargers lost two of their first three games, and the Steelers also got off to a sluggish start, sitting with a 1-2-1 mark after their first four contests. But after that they started moving in a big way. In fact, their rather disappointing 24-17 loss to Denver last week brought a six-game winning streak to a halt. They’ve been doing it on both sides of the ball; Ben Roethlisberger is a 66% passer who has 3664 yards through the air. And the offensive line has done a tremendous job, allowing him to be sacked only 16 times, which is even more impressive considering he’s thrown the ball 472 times.

On defense, Pittsburgh has 39 sacks of its own, and third-downnents’ third down conversion rate of 35.7% is more than respectable. We mentioned that Rivers is over nine yards per attempt. Well, the Steelers have allowed opposing quarterbacks just 6.2 yards per pass.

The Chargers obviously should have more than 28 sacks, but Joey Bosa had been out for a while, and now that he has returned, this will continue to be a more productive part of the defense. What might be something of a concern is the perspective absence of running back Melvin Gordon, who had been averaging 5.2 yards per carry and caught 44 passes, but sprained an MCL and has been listed as “week to week.”

Those people who were in a panic about Pittsburgh’s rushing game have calmed down a bit with the success James Conner has had. Of course, Conner has been an amazing story, in the respect that he has overcome Hodgkin’s lymphoma to become a starting back in the NFL. With Le’Veon Bell holdout, that gave him his opportunity, and he has made the most of it, with 849 rushing yards and 453 receiving. Overall, he has scored eleven touchdowns, and even though he is not as dynamic as Bell, this is nonetheless anything but a weak area for this team.

And at the beginning of the season, many people would be surprised if they were told that Antonio Brown would not have the most receiving yards for the Steelers. But Juju Smith-Schuster has become the perfect complement, with 1055 yards (13.7 per reception). Brown has not been forgotten at all; in fact, he’s got eleven touchdown grabs, which has satisfied his ego….. sort of.

This could be a nice spot for the Chargers and Rivers, who completed an unbelievable 25 passes in a row in last week’s game against Arizona, where Los Angeles gave up the first ten points in the game and then scored 45 of their own. Rivers, in fact, has been a 67% proposition is a road underdog over the last five years. So you wouldn’t be crazy if you took the points with the Chargers in this one.
