Chargers vs Bills Odds and Preview
In the off-season, the Bills had acquired AJ McCarron, who had labored as a backup behind Andy Dalton in Cincinnati, and they thought they’d have a pretty good temporary solution until first-round draft pick Josh Allen was ready to assume the starting role. McCarron was slowed down by injuries in training camp, and he was subsequently traded to the Oakland Raiders. Nathan Peterman, who was the backup last season, actually looked best in camp, and he got the call from head coach Sean McDermott to make the start. Well, Peterman did not produce, to put it mildly. He completed only five of 18 passes and was intercepted twice before being yanked in favor of Allen, was pressed into duty sooner than he expected. The Bills had 153 yards of total offense and were embarrassed.
So really, the question for them was who would start at quarterback on Sunday. The consensus had been that it might be a little too early to give Allen a baptism under fire, but there is almost no choice, so he has gotten the call.
There are no question that the quarterback position with the Chargers, as Philip Rivers for over 424 yards in the opening game. What failed to the Bolts was their defense, which had finished third in the NFL in points allowed last year, but gave up a couple of quick touchdowns to the Kansas City Chiefs, which made it hard to catch up. The final was 38-28, as Kansas City wide receiver Tyreek Hill had a field day, with 169 yards from scrimmage and a 91-yard punt return.
Good thing Peterman does not get the start, as McDermott possibly helps him avoid the nightmare he had when these two teams faced each other last season. In that one, McDermott had made the decision to use him in place of Tyrod Taylor, and Peterman went out there and threw five interceptions in the first half, as the Chargers laughed their way to a 52-24 victory. Remember that the Chargers have an accomplished pass rush, with book-end harassment specialists like Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram, and it seems that every component of Buffalo’s offense is, at best, a work in progress.
Los Angeles really had no problems moving the football against Kansas City, with 541 total yards, holding the football for 34 1/2 minutes. What was particularly encouraging was Melvin Gordon’s 166 yards from scrimmage, which included 102 through the air. We are assuming that is defense hasn’t totally deteriorated from last season, but they did get burned by big plays. And another thing to remember about the Chargers is that they tend to break out of the box slowly; since 2015, they have compiled a 1-9 straight-up record over the first three weeks of the regular schedule.
