Browns Will Try to Escape Infamy vs. Steelers
A lot of the eyes of the football-watching public are going to be on the Steel City this weekend, not just because they’d like to see if the Pittsburgh Steelers can close out the season with a flourish, but to see if the Cleveland Browns can avoid making the wrong kind of history. Right now the Browns are winless, and there’s only one of the team in the history of the NFL that has done that for a 16-game schedule. Since the Steelers still have at least some hope of getting home-field advantage in the AFC playoffs, they should ideally be motivated in this game that begins at 1 PM ET at Heinz Field. Browns vs Steelers Odds – Betting Preview
Certainly the Browns are thinking toward next season, and I would start with the NFL Draft, where they will have two of the first five picks. But you have to believe that there is a certain urgency attached to this one, as it would with any team that my going to the regular-season finale with an 0-15 straight-of record. Early in the campaign, the Browns were playing some games close, and that included the season opener against Pittsburgh, which they lost just 21-18. But they are only 3-12 against the football pointspread, so as the campaign has progressed, they have let a lot of these losses get out of hand. And it would have seemed an opportune time to pick up a victory last Sunday against the Chicago Bears, but all they could manage was a single field goal, as DeShone Kizer, the rookie quarterback, was intercepted twice. That brings his total up to 21 on the season, and no one in the NFL has more.
Of course, one of the side stories of this game is that Antonio Brown will sit out another one for the Steelers, as he hopes to heal up his calf in time to play two weeks from now (Pittsburgh will have a first-round bye, regardless of the results here). Ben Roethlisberger has been developing his targets, and that includes the surprising rookie, Juju Smith-Schuster, who is averaging almost 16 yards per catch. And Martavis Bryant, who was complaining early in the season about not getting enough opportunities, has pulled in 44 passes himself. But Big Ben will probably be sitting out this game, along with Le’Veon Bell, and that gives the impression that the Steelers don’t think very much of the New York Jets’ ability to beat New England, which is what would be necessary for Pittsburgh to gain the #1 seed in the playoffs.
The Steelers’ defense got seven more sacks against the Houston Texans last weekend, bringing their total to 50 on the season. Can Kizer navigate through all of this? Well, some of that might depend on who sits down. It would be nice if Cleveland could utilize its running game, which has averaged 4.5 yards per carry. But we doubt anything is going to save Kizer’s starting position for next year. The Browns recently hired a new general manager, John Dorsey, who used to have that same job with the Kansas City Chiefs, and it looks like he is going to make finding a quarterback is #1 priority. Kizer did not show enough to merit sticking around in anything more substantial than a backup position. Remember that Cleveland will have the number one overall selection.
In the opener, Bell, who reported to camp late and was just getting back into the swing of things, only had 32 yards on the ground. There would be a legitimate question as to how long Mike Tomlin will leave just about everyone in this game, which gives us some pause as to whether to lay the points., although it’s tough to back the Browns, who lack personnel on an overall basis, even with the return of explosive wide receiver Josh Gordon.
