Auburn and Ole Miss Meet with National Title Hopes on the Line

By Charles Jay

The Auburn Tigers are trying to put themselves into position to get into the mad scramble for the national championship once again. And on Saturday they hope to take a major step in that direction when they tackle the Ole Miss Rebels in an SEC showdown that is not only important within the conference, but certainly has championship implications. Game time for football betting action is set for 7 PM ET in Oxford.

It is a foregone conclusion that this game is going to eliminate one of the two teams from national championship consideration. Auburn is rated fourth in the country in both major polls, but in the rankings that really count at this point in the season, they are #3. Mississippi is #7 in the Associated Press poll, #9 in the coaches poll, but #4 in the playoff rankings. So if they can beat Auburn there is no question that they are putting themselves into solid position, although there is still the Egg Bowl matchup with top -ranked Mississippi State to come in the final regular-season game.

Auburn is 6-1 straight-up and 3-4 against the football pointspread. Ole Miss is 7-1, straight-up and against the number.

In the football betting lines that a been posted on this game by the people at VietBet, Mississippi is the slight favorite at home:

Auburn vs Ole Miss

Mississippi Rebels -2
Auburn Tigers +2

Over 51 points -110
Under 51 points -110

Ole Miss is coming off a loss, as they fell by a 10-7 score against LSU in Baton Rouge. Still, this defense has to be considered one of the best in the country, as it has allowed only seven touchdowns and 84 total points in eight games. If there is something to be concerned about, however, it is that LSU, which has a deep backfield, was able to rush for 264 yards against the Rebels. Also, as VietBet customers observed, the Bayou Bengals turned the ball over four times and Ole Miss was not really able to take advantage, even though LSU had a vastly inferior quarterback (Anthony Jennings).

Football bettors have to wonder whether this really bodes well for their chances against Auburn, which comes to the table with a very well-oiled attack that emphasizes the run, but is nicely balanced. Auburn’s running game has averaged six yards per carry, and quarterback Nick Marshall has been very efficient, throwing 18 touchdown passes and being intercepted only three times. Certainly he has progressed throwing the ball, and it should be noted that Auburn scored 30 points in last year’s meeting, despite only 83 yards passing.

Auburn’s only loss came at the hands of the MSU Bulldogs, but even though he has a big following in the Magnolia State, though Wallace is not Dak Prescott. In other words, Auburn has seen better. Don’t expect the Tigers to give the Rebels a lot of cheap opportunities either; they’ve only had one game where they turned the ball over more than once.

VietBet patrons may also be interested in the fact that even though Ole Miss has covered seven of eight this season, Auburn has covered its last five games when getting points. This is a game between one team that has been there before (Auburn, of course, was in the last BCS championship game) and a team that is only now just trying to climb the ladder. Both of the Nkemdiche brothers, Denzel and Robert, got banged-up in that LSU game, and if they either can’t play or are less than 100%, that’s a pretty big blow to the Ole Miss stop unit.
