The Browns had the first pick in the draft, and used it to select defensive end Myles Garrett, who will eventually be a game-changer for them. But he won’t be able to change enough in this one, as Cleveland is going through a great deal of transition on the defensive side of the football. Part of the transition led to the release of Joe Haden, a Pro Bowl cornerback who has gone through some injury difficulties the last couple of seasons. But Cleveland loss was Pittsburgh’s gain, as the Steelers signed him to a contract. Inasmuch as Cleveland does not have a true #1 receiver after the departure of Terrelle Pryor, expect that Haden will be sufficiently pumped up to shut down at least some of the Browns’ passing game.
That passing game is led by a rookie. DeShone Kizer comes out of Notre Dame and was seen as a bargain by Cleveland management with a second-round pick. Apparently he showed them enough in training camp to get the starting nod over Brock Osweiler, who was acquired in a trade with Houston, but has been subsequently cut from the team and signed by his old squad, the Denver Broncos. Kizer has a lot of physical skills, but Cleveland knows enough not to have to rely on him too much too early. So you are probably looking at a game plan that includes a great deal of running back Isaiah Crowell, and that, for the time being, might make them a little too one-dimensional to deal with the Pittsburgh defense, which has a lot of standouts at the linebacker position.

Ben Roethlisberger has one of his favorite targets back, as Martavis Bryant has been reinstated from the suspension that took him completely out of the 2016 season. They are currently looking at the possibility of nine different starters on defense that they had at this point last season. And Pittsburgh added some new blood in the draft, with the addition of outside linebacker TJ Watt, the brother of JJ, who is generally regarded as the most disruptive defensive player in the league. Pittsburgh was indeed generous against the run last season, giving up 4.3 yards per carry, but if they can concentrate on that in this game, it will make the job a little easier.
