Patriots vs Bills Odds – CJ’s Take
The Patriots are on a four-game winning streak, and a couple of weeks ago they handed the Kansas City Chiefs their only loss of the season. Last week the special teams came up big against the Chicago Bears, accounting for two touchdowns, as New England weathered a near-miss on Mitchell Trubisky’s last-second Hail Mary to preserve a 38-31 victory in the Windy City.
Buffalo has gone through quarterback hell this season. After Tyrod Taylor led them to a playoff spot, they cut him (later signed with Cleveland), then were counting on AJ McCarron to keep the seat warm while Josh Allen, the first-round pick out of Wyoming, felt his bearings in the NFL. But McCarron got traded in training camp, and Nathan Peterman started the year and led the Bills into some disaster. It push Allen into the lineup sooner than expected. However, when Allen injured his elbow, and head coach Sean McDermott did not want to turn to Peterman, he brought Derek Anderson out of retirement.
Anderson, who actually made the Pro Bowl in 2007 with the Cleveland Browns, had been with Carolina when McDermott was an assistant coach there, so the two are familiar with each other. Anderson is in his 14th NFL season, so it doesn’t necessarily take as long to grasp a playbook as might happen with a youngster. So in he went as the starter against Indianapolis last week. The results were not encouraging, as he threw three interceptions and lost a fumble in the 37-5 defeat. But he’ll get another start, and he may or may not be accompanied by running back LeSean McCoy, although the team was “optimistic” that he could make his way out of the concussion protocol.
It is true that Anderson is able to handle going in quickly from the mental standpoint, but it has been pointed out that from a physical perspective, he is not anywhere near where he should be. After all, he did not go to training camp, and did not even know whether he would catch on with anyone. When he was ultimately signed, it was to be a “mentor” to Allen – something that could still happen. But for now, he has to go against the defending AFC champs.
And those defending AFC champs are a little stronger this than they were last.
Rob Gronkowski should be returning to the lineup for the Patriots after sitting out last week’s game, and in 13 career appearances against Buffalo, he has 1027 yards receiving. We are not going to make believe that Tom Brady & Co. do not have a challenge ahead of them, because the Buffalo defense has to be given a lot of credit. They are fifth-best in the NFL in yards allowed per drive, although because the ineptitude of the offense often puts them in bad field position, they are 20th best in POINTS allowed per drive. The starting field position of the defense, in fact, is 29th in the NFL.
The Patriots have covered on five of their last six trips to New Era Field, and what we can visualize is that they get off to an early lead, and the Bills don’t have the ability to catch up, as Anderson tries to dink and dunk his way down the field. This should be a less problematic defensive assignment for New England than usual, simply because of the fact that Anderson isn’t operating with the whole playbook and the Patriots don’t really have to defend the whole field.
