Redskins vs Giants Odds – NFL Odds and Game Preview
There seem to be no appropriate words to describe the disappointment surrounding the New York Giants right now, as even with the addition of rookie running back Saquon Berkeley, they are slumping very badly on the offensive end. With only one victory to their credit, there are a lot of rumors swirling around the Meadowlands and Big Apple these days, and that is basically the atmosphere as the Giants get set to play host to the Washington Redskins in an NFC East battle, scheduled for Sunday at 1 PM ET at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ. Redskins vs Giants Odds – CJ’s Take
Well, the Giants went up against a defense that realistically could be looked upon as one of the worst in the NFL last time out, and in the first 55 minutes of play, they managed only six points against the Atlanta Falcons. Some of the play calling has come severely under fire, and at this point there are some boo-birds in the New York media suggesting that eventually Eli Manning, who is now 37 years old, might take a seat soon, in favor of rookie Kyle Lauletta. There certainly were a lot of questions about the play calls in the waning moments against the Falcons, when the Giants could have pulled to within three points with about a minute remaining, leaving time for an onside kick and some kind of desperation. Instead, Manning called two quarterback sneaks that were unsuccessful, and by the time the Giants got their points on the board, there were only a few seconds left. So where does the criticism go – Manning, or head coach Pat Shurmur? Obviously both of them are going to take some blame.
The Redskins now lead the NFC East with a 4-2 record, even though they have not been blowing people away with their offense. Any team that is going to use Alex Smith at quarterback has to have a plan that includes minimizing turnovers, and thus far Smith, who led the NFL in passing efficiency last season, has thrown only two interceptions in 196 attempts. You would have to consider Washington’s defense to be a pleasant surprise this season; even though they had a lapse against New Orleans, allowing 43 points to Drew Brees and company in the Superdome, they have held all the other opponents to 21 points or less. And that is, after all, the name of the game – preventing points from being scored.
Manning had 399 passing yards against Atlanta, so it’s almost a crime that they produced so few points against the defense that has been decimated by injuries. The Redskins have faced better quarterbacks and even better running backs, having taken care of business against Ezekiel Elliott and the Cowboys last week (20-17) and Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers the week before (23-17). And why we are talking about pleasant surprises, how Adrian Peterson, who came off the scrap heap and has given Washington at least serviceable work in the backfield, averaging 4.3 yards per carry and actually on track for another thousand-yard season.
Having a guy like Peterson and a quarterback like Smith is helpful when you want to control the football, and the Redskins have averaged more than 32 minutes of possession time. Naturally, the objective here is to keep the Giants off the field, although the sum of New York’s parts would seem to be a lot less than their individual values. Odell Backham is averaging just 12.2 yards per reception, and while Barkley has logged the ball for 4.9 yards per carry and caught 49 passes, a lot of that seems wasted. Manning is a sitting duck for teams who can really rush the passer, although Washington has not necessarily been fearsome in that regard.
When you take everything into account, Washington is the team that has played better, and carry out its game plan better. Of course, the winds can be tricky in the Meadowlands, so a lot can happen. But there is so much instability going on around the Giants right now that it’s hard to recommend them.
