Rams vs 49ers Odds – CJ’s Take
The Niners have lost four straight games, and of course some of this can be traced to the loss of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who was out for the season with a knee injury. There have also been some other injuries to deal with, as people like running back Matt Breida and tight end George Kittle may not be 100% going out onto the field. CJ Beathard, who made some starts for the team last season, prior to Jimmy G’s debut, has been given the responsibility of running this offense, has shown a little more command in it than he had last year. Indeed, he has completed 64% of his throws for 7.8 yards an attempt, so he hasn’t been dinking-and-dunking the ball.
Breida, the Georgia Southern product, has averaged 6.8 yards per carry, so he has successfully answered the questions of those who wondered whether San Francisco would have a running game in the absence of injured Jerick McKinnon. But he is battling an ankle injury that could limit his effectiveness.
The Rams have a tendency to gobble up real estate, whether that is through the air or on the ground. Last week they did a lot of business on the ground, as Todd Gurley, who has been talking about not doing enough for the offense, broke out for 203 yards, his best as a pro. So he’s now averaging 4.8 yards per carry. And if you want to talk about an NFL quarterback who makes his throws count, it’s Jared Goff, who floundered in the previous regime witrh Jeff Fisher but has come very much alive under Sean McVay. Goff is 69% accurate, but that is only part of the story. He has also averaged just under ten yards an attempt, and when that happens, you are going to put a lot of pressure on opposing defenses. The thing is, teams generally play from behind against them, so they don’t run the ball as much as they usually would. The Niners have run the ball 167 times (as opposed to 203 passes), so it wil be interesting to see whether coach Kyle Shanahan will stick to the game plan, and for how long. Kittle, who is averaging 15.9 yards per catch, has 429 yards receiving, and that puts the unheralded tight end on a Pro Bowl path. If Marquise Goodwin is healthy, he stretches defenses with his world-class speed, and remember that Aqib Talib is out of action for the Rams.
Technical trends point us in a certain direction as far as the total is concerned, with both these teams trending “over.” We don’t think Sunday’s game is going to be won with defense, so we would also look “over” this posted total of 52 points.
