Chicago has new leadership in Matt Nagy, the former offensive coordinator with the Kansas City Chiefs. They have gone to a lot of run-pass options with this attack, and Mitchell Trubisky, who was the second overall pick in last year’s draft, seems to be a willing student. No, he did not pass for a lot of yards (171), but he got rid of the ball quickly, for the most part. When all is said and done, you’ll see that Chicago has a much better receiving corps than they did last season, and that includes additional help from people like rookie Anthony Miller and tight end Trey Burton, who is probably best known for throwing a touchdown pass to Nick Foles in last year’s Super Bowl.
The Bears were playing almost perfect football deep into the third quarter at Lambeau Field, leading the Green Bay Packers 20-0. They had also knocked Aaron Rodgers out of the game, but then Rodgers made a gallant return, coming out of the locker room to toss three touchdown passes in the fourth quarter. Just like that, the Bears were a loser.
When you look at the overall picture for Seattle, you could sense that they had some rebuilding to do. They have lost a lot of top-level performers off the defense, including Michael Bennett, Richard Sherman and cam Chancellor. What they have left isn’t bad, at least on paper, but when they took the field in Denver, they were extremely permissive, allowing 470 yards, which was the most the Broncos had game from scrimmage since the 2015 season. While they were able to intercept Case Keenum three times, they were not very effective on the other side of the ball, putting together only 13 first downs. Russell Wilson was sacked six times, and first-round draft choice Rashaad Penny, who was supposed to supply some answers in the run game, had just eight yards on seven carries. In fact, the most productive guy they had was unheralded running back Chris Carlson, who had 79 yards from scrimmage. Considering they had the ball only 25 minutes, it’s a wonder they were able to stay within three points (27-24 defeat).
The Seahawks will be facing at least one defender who is every bit as scary as anyone Denver has on the stop end. Khalil Mack, who had just come into the fold after his much-ballyhooed trade from Oakland, which in turn came after a much-ballyhooed holdout, was all over the place, making tackles, stripping the ball; recovering fumbles and taking an interception 27 yards into the end zone. You can expect that he will be in Wilson’s face, and if the Seattle offensive line is as troubled as we think it is, there is danger lurking.
It comes back to the psychological effect of the Green Bay loss. That was not just a long-time rival, but an NFC North competitor, so it hurts on a couple of different levels. Nagy and his staff, which includes defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, who was left over from the fired John Fox’s regime, are getting an early test here. The Bears, fundamentally speaking, should win over a Seattle team that is in decline, but this is a game between a team used to winning and a team used to losing, and that has to count for something.
