Panthers vs Titans Preview
In Week 1, the Panthers slugged their way to a 16-8 victory over the Dallas Cowboys. In the process, they held Dallas to just 232 yards. Newton was 17-26 for 161 yards, and he added 58 on the ground. This season, the philosophy of the Panthers as far as running the football appears to be a bit different. They know that Newton is going to go off on his scampers, certainly, but they would love to be able to split carries between CJ Anderson and Christian McCaffrey. Anderson had 35 yards in his Carolina debut, but we have seen from his efforts with the Denver Broncos that he is capable of more, so we will look forward to that. All told, the Panthers had 147 yards rushing against Dallas.
Atlanta was rather disappointing offensively in their season opener, dropping a 18-12 decision to the Eagles in a game where they could not take advantage of red zone chances. They also couldn’t obey the rules, apparently, because they were flagged for 15 penalties. Matt Ryan had a subpar night, completing just 21 of 43 passes for 251 yards, and Atlanta’s running game was somewhat stagnant.
Atlanta led the league in scoring two seasons ago, when they went to the Super Bowl. Last year they were 15th, and a lot of people are attributing this to their switching offensive coordinators. Kyle Shanahan had worked hard to develop a rapport with Ryan, and then the two finally got clicking. Ryan won the MVP award and Atlanta had a 28-3 lead over the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl before the roof caved in. This attack has not been nearly as productive with Steve Sarkisian making the calls. They were down more than eleven points from their 2016 average, even though they still made the playoffs. When you have 16 first downs and 299 total yards, there’s going to be a lot of room for improvement. You can’t fault Julio Jones though; he had ten catches for 169 yards. The problem is getting someone lined up out wide on the other side to draw some attention away from him. That’s something the Falcons have not been very good at. They thought they could get something out of wide receiver Calvin Ridley, their first-round pick in the draft, but he didn’t have a catch in the opener. That kind of thing will have to change.
