Well, the Cleveland Browns started out the 2017 season with a little bit of optimism, but at the end, they became the second team in history to post an 0-16 regular-season record. They did not make a head coaching change, although they did some shuffling in the front office, put a new offensive coordinator in place, and added a number of players who could really change the face of this team.

2018 Cleveland Browns Odds and Betting Preview
Cleveland was deficient in almost all areas last season, and they have now won just a single game out of their last 32. They turned the ball over 41 times, accounting for a minus-28 margin, and they scored just 14.6 points per game, which was last in the league.
So they went about remedying this. Todd Haley, the former coach of the Arizona Cardinals who has in recent years been the offensive coordinator in Pittsburgh, takes the coordinator position under Hue Jackson, who was retained by new general manager John Dorsey. The Browns had gone to an analytics-oriented approach the last couple of years, but now that has been adjusted somewhat, as Dorsey is more of an “old school” guy.
Nonetheless, they did defer to analytics just a little in making their first selection in the draft, as they nabbed Baker Mayfield, the Heisman Trophy winner out of Oklahoma. It is doubtful that he will become the starting quarterback right away, and to make sure they didn’t necessarily have to rush him into the fray immediately, the Browns acquired Tyrod Taylor, who led Buffalo to its first playoff berth in 17 years. Taylor may not be the most productive passer, but he can buy time with his mobility and through only four interceptions last year. In fact, over the last three seasons, in the process of putting more than 1200 passes into the air, he has tossed only 14 passes into enemy hands.
Taylor knows that he is not the long-term choice for this team, but he can help them make a marked improvement over last season’s offensive output, with a little help.
So will Taylor, or Mayfield, have enough help? Well, the Browns have to solve the problem of protecting whoever is under center, now that future Hall of Famer Joe Thomas has retired. Shon Coleman is listed on the depth chart as the #1 left tackle, but Austin Corbett, the second-round draft choice at of Nevada, might eventually work his way into that position.
Cleveland lost Isaiah Crowell at running back, but they were able to sign Carlos Hyde, the former San Francisco 49er, and that might constitute an upgrade. Add to that the talents of Nick Chubb, the second-round pick out of Georgia, and suddenly this team can be well-fortified in the backfield. Also, Jarvis Landry, the former Miami wide receiver who caught 112 passes last year to lead the league, has come on board, and the Browns hope they can get a full season out of Josh Gordon, the former NFL yardage leader who pulled in 15 passes upon coming back from suspension.
In addition to having the top pick in the draft, Cleveland also had the fourth overall selection, and they used it to pick cornerback Denzel Ward out of Ohio State, someone with almost unlimited upside. On the third round, they picked Miami defensive end Chad Thomas and they also got Chris Smith as a free-agent from the Cincinnati Bengals. The secondary will be better; one of the new arrivals is Demarious Randall, the former Green Bay Packer who will start at the free safety position.
We don’t know Cleveland is going to make any kind of an impact on the division or wild-card races, but their improvement this season should be noticeable.
