2018 Cincinnati Bengals Odds and Betting Preview

This was a team that ranked dead last in the NFL in yardage per game (281), and part of that low output involved an ineffective offensive line. There were moves made in the off-season to address that, including the addition of Cordy Glenn, who could play left tackle, and Billy Price, drafted in the first round out of Ohio State, who should play center.

There has always been some concern over who could be a proper complement a receiver for AJ Green, and while Brandon LaFell is certainly capable, he’s not going to scare many secondaries. The Bengals hoped that they had acquired someone who could outrun secondaries when they drafted John Ross in the first round last year, but he did not catch a single pass. Andy Dalton is kind of middle of the road at quarterback, and still be looking for some support out of his running game. Mark Walton of Miami was drafted in the fourth round, and they hope to turn Joe Mixon loose this season. Mixon, who came to Cincinnati amidst a lot of controversy after being drafted out of Oklahoma, averaged just 3.5 yards per carry as a rookie.

It was almost a foregone conclusion that Marvin Lewis was going to step down as head coach at the end of the season, but he crossed everybody up by coming to an agreement to stay. He has never won a playoff game as a head coach, but his salary is very much in line, and that’s one of the factors that enable him to stick around. As far as getting to that next level, it’s going to be tough with this offense, because it put so much pressure on the defense.

The stop unit was on the field for 68 snaps per game last season, more than any other team in the NFL. Yet they were right in the middle of the pack in terms of scoring defense, allowing 21.8 points per game. Adam Jones leaves town as a free agent, and the Bengals dedicated six draft picks to the defensive side of the football. These include safety Jesse Bates at Wake Forest, who was taken on the second round, Malik Jefferson of Texas, a linebacker who was a third-round selection, and Sam Hubbard from Ohio State, a defensive and was also taken in Brown 3. Defensive tackle Chris Baker, who played with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season, was added as a free-agent, as was former Buffalo linebacker Preston Brown. Will all of these changes make a difference? Well, that could be, but Paul Guenther, who had been the defensive coordinator for the last four years, has taken off for Oakland, where he will work on the staff under Jon Gruden.

All in all, there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot to get excited about here, unless, for example, Mixon can get a breakout season and the rookie offensive linemen can be healthy and produce.
