2018 NCAA Tournament Picks – CJ’s Take on Clemson vs Kansas in Sweet 16 Showdown:

One of the things that has been an issue for Clemson is the injury loss of 6-8 forward Dante Grantham, and after he got hurt, this turned into a team that was playing around the .500 mark. So they have had to resort to going “small,” and they have some people who can do that, including 6-3 guard Gabe DeVoe and Marcquise Reed, who has the top “usage” rate in the backcourt.

Kansas is a team that has shot 49.6% from the field this season, and that is usually a characteristic of Bill Self’s teams. This year, they had one of the better players in the country and Devonte Graham, who has made most All-America teams, averaging 17.4 points and 7.5 assists per game. Graham hit only one of his seven shots against Seton Hall, and you know is much more capable than that. Even when he was going cold, Kansas got past a very legitimate opponent to get to this point.

The Kansas offense is ranked fifth in the nation in Adjusted Efficiency, and they are operating best when they can use the big man,Udoka Azubuike, who has come back from a sprained MCL, scoring at a pretty good per-minute rate against Seton Hall (10 in just 21). And it really got a big boost out of Malik Newman, who has averaged 25 points over his last five games. That takes Kansas to a new level, and it brings a greater challenge to the Clemson defense, which ranks seventh in the nation against two-pointers (43.8%), but is a little more generous from beyond the arc. That’s one place where Kansas really excels, with 40.3% accuracy, ninth best in the nation.

For Clemson to win this game, they are going to have to keep the pace relatively slow, but Kansas can operate pretty efficiently in the half-court setting with its big man. Otherwise, there they are going with four guards, with Svi Mykhailiuk as the 6-8 hybrid. We look forward to a nice matchup between Azubuike and Elijah Thomas, who averages 2.2 blocks per game.

All in all, Clemson has had a great season and Brad Brownell, who took his third different team into the NCAA Tournament. But we are not sure their weaponry generally matched that of the Jayhawks, who can shoot well from anywhere.
