The Georgia Bulldogs have obviously made tremendous strides in their second season under coach Kirby Smart, an alumnus who is also a disciple of Alabama’s Nick Saban. Smart will have an opportunity to possibly advance to play his mentor in the national championship game if he can guide his Bulldogs to a victory over the Oklahoma Sooners in the Rose Bowl, which furnishes one-half of the four-team college football playoff this season. 2017 Rose Bowl Odds – Betting Preview
Georgia has had to endure some adversity this season, because quarterback Jacob Eason was injured in the opening game. But they got lucky because freshmen Jake Fromm has stepped in and done more than a credible job for them. Fromm has 21 touchdown passes and 63% accuracy, and he has been a pretty good “game manager,” throwing just five interceptions and allowing the Bulldogs to win games utilizing what they do best.
And what they do about as well as anyone in the country is run the football. There are not one, not two, but THREE different running backs capable of taking over a game.
Oklahoma is obviously led by Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield, who has guided the #1 offense in the nation. The Sooners have weapons all over the place, and this will be the biggest challenge that Georgia has yet faced. At no time this season with the Bulldogs have encountered a team this balanced, which will stretch its stop unit.
Oklahoma comes into this game with a record of 12-1 straight-up (8-5 ATS), having lost only against Iowa State. They defeated TCU 41-17 in the initial Big 12 championship game. Georgia is also 12-1 straight-up, and they avenged their only loss of the season when they beat Auburn 28-7 in the SEC title game. The Bulldogs are a sizzling 9-4 against the pointspread.
Fromm could hand the ball off to anyone in his backfield with a reasonable expectation that they can make a big play. Nick Chubb is the leader, with 1175 yards, but then you also have Sony Michel, who, like Chubb, has scored 13 touchdowns on the ground (and has 948 yards of his own). And then there is the star of the future in freshman D’Andre Swift, who has averaged 8.2 yards per carry. Oklahoma has given up four yards per carry, and we are not sure they have what it takes to consistently stop Georgia on the ground.
But the Sooners could prevail in a game that would depend on trading points. Mayfield has put up some gaudy numbers, completing 71% with 41 touchdowns and only five interceptions. There is also depth in the backfield, as Rodney Anderson and Trey Sermon have combined for 1670 yards and six yards per carry. And we wonder whether the Bulldogs have a matchup for tight end Mark Andrews, who is the best in the country at his position.
Georgia gave up only eleven touchdown passes all season long, and only three teams in the nation surrender fewer points per game than they did (just 13.2). Roquan Smith is probably the best linebacker in the country, and obviously they are going to be counting on him as a main cog in slowing down Oklahoma on the ground. But he can’t be in two places at once, and this is the dilemma that Oklahoma forces you to face. The Sooners have also at times really turned on the defense, especially when they went to Columbus to face Ohio State in the season’s second game, coming away with a 31-16 victory. They are fully capable of doing the same here.
