Cleveland is always seemingly undergoing a massive rebuilding project, but now they are making use of analytics to a great extent, as they hired Paul DiPodesta to help them chart their course. This might show results eventually, but has a right now this team is 0-11 straight-up and 2-9 against the football pointspread. They were able to win last December 24 against the Chargers, who were hardly motivated in a 20-17 Cleveland victory. It’s a little different right now for Anthony Lynn’s team, which lost its first four games, three of which were by a field goal or less, but has since come on to win five of its last seven and inject itself into the AFC West race. The Chargers, who are 5-6 straight-up (6-4-1 ATS), are one game behind the Kansas City Chiefs, who won their first five games and looked like they were going to run away with the division. So now things get really interesting.
On Thanksgiving, the Chargers made mincemeat out of the Dallas Cowboys, beating the 28-6 behind 434 passing yards by Philip Rivers. They seem to have something positive going on both sides of the football, and now Lynn, the first-year head coach who was with the Buffalo Bills last season, is doing what he promised he would do – get the running game more involved. In fact, the Chargers have run almost 48% of the time over the last three games.
Of course, Cleveland is experiencing some growing pains with rookie quarterback DeShone Kizer, who has completed only 53% of his passes. The Browns really need some help on the outside, and that’s why they are happy to have Josh Gordon back in the fold. Gordon has not played in an official NFL game in three years, but he did lead the league in receiving yards in 2013, and in the pre-season he caught five passes for 116 yards. So he seemed to be able to jump back into form.
One thing that handicaps Cleveland, however, is the fact that Joe Thomas is out with an injury, and that Iron Man was one of the NFL’s all-time best left tackles. Remember that the Chargers have 32 sacks, and they can bring pressure from both sides with Melvin Ingram and Joey Bosa. However, the Chargers have not been that stingy a team against opposition ground attacks; in fact, they have allowed 133.5 yards per game and 4.9 yards per carry. There are obviously a lot of fundamental problems with the Browns, but they did something encouraging last week, which was to gain 405 yards with 21 first downs against Cincinnati, even in defeat. But they are minus-17 in the turnover ratio, and a God-awful 8-29-1 ATS in their last 38 games.
