If the Houston Texans are going to be a real contender for a playoff spot in the AFC, they are going to have to get some very solid play out of quarterback Tom Savage, who was pressed back into action after the injury to rookie DeShaun Watson. On Monday night they will not have the easiest assignment in the world, as the Baltimore Ravens will be waiting for them at M&T Bank Stadium in a game that kicks off at 8:30 PM ET. Houston has had an up-and-down season, to say the least. Savage was supposed to be the guy warming the seat up for Watson, but he only lasted through the first half of the first game, as he was sacked six times by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Head coach Bill O’Brien pulled the trigger and put Watson in the game, and the first-year man out of Clemson simply made things happen. When he went down with an injury, he was tied for the league lead with 19 touchdown passes and looked very much on his way to winning the Rookie of the Year award. But now he’s gone, and Savage, who completed 22 of his 32 passes last week against the Arizona Cardinals, is just a 53% passer on the season.
Baltimore’s Joe Flacco has been inconsistent and very “short” this season, averaging just 5.4 yards per attempt. He’s been intercepted 11 times, and he just hasn’t felt very good all season long, after suffering through injuries in training camp. Last week against the Green Bay Packers, he completed 22 for 28, but for just 183 yards. Fortunately, the Ravens faced a struggling quarterback in Brett Hundley, and they were able to rack up six sacks and three interceptions in a 23-0 victory.
Houston is 4-6 straight-up and 6-4 against the points, and they are three games behind Jacksonville in the AFC South. However, since there are a bunch of teams at 4-6, and Baltimore, at 5-5 (6-4 ATS) currently hold onto the second wild-card spot the conference, the Texans are not out of the chase by any means.
The Baltimore defense has been very solid and opportunistic; they have given up only 5.8 yards per passing attempt and have intercepted 16 passes. In other words, they are probably just the kind of defensive unit Savage doesn’t want to see right now. And that’s a big difference between him and Watson because the rookie had a lot of mobility and was able to improvise, even if he made some mistakes. The Ravens have had some great days indeed; in fact, they have shutout three opponents already. Interestingly enough, in their five victories, they have allowed a total of 17 points.
Leading the way for Baltimore on the ground is Alex Collins, who is averaging five yards a carry, and thankfully he’s provided at least something of an answer – at times anyway. Danny Woodhead has just been activated, and he’s extremely useful because he can catch passes out of the backfield. As far as the wide receivers are concerned, well, there’s been disappointment there, but you have to lay some of the responsibility at the feet of Flacco, who has a great arm and is known as a guy who can throw it down the field, but that 5.4-yard average sticks out like a sore thumb. The Ravens have averaged just 8.2 yards per reception, and that is last in the NFL.
We are not sure that the Ravens’ offense has enough firepower to really extend a margin here, so our best instinct is to look “under” in this Monday night matchup.
