The Cardinals had a huge lead over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but they gave up 27 points in the fourth quarter at barely held on for a 38-33 victory. However, something has changed all of a sudden for Arizona; they appear to have a ground game now.
That’s because they made a trade with the New Orleans Saints to acquire Adrian Peterson in exchange for a conditional sixth-round draft choice. That could be one of the biggest steals in many years if Peterson helps Arizona get to the playoffs. He didn’t seem to have a place with the Saints, but as he stepped into the Cardinals’ lineup, he ran 26 times for 134 yards. Immediately he became the team’s leading rusher on the season, six games into the campaign. They simply weren’t getting anything out of their other former NFL rushing champion, Chris Johnson. And now they have cut him.
Let’s talk about the residual effect of having someone like Peterson running the ball effectively. Carson Palmer did not have to have as much pressure on him, and as a result, he completed 18 of 22 passes for 283 yards and three touchdowns. That’s what the Cardinals need – balance, and if they can truly get it, Palmer can work downfield to speedy receivers like JJ Nelson and Jaron Brown, and then underneath to Larry Fitzgerald, who has caught 42 passes for 465 yards already. And let’s not forget that John Brown had 144 receiving yards against the Rams in one of the meetings last season. Now imagine what could happen when David Johnson comes back from his wrist injury. Bruce Arians, a talented offensive mind, could think of all kinds of possibilities in utilizing both Peterson and David Johnson at the same time.
