The Panthers lost 28-23 last week, and things caught up to Cam Newton in a big way, as he threw three interceptions. That brings his total to eight on the season, and he might be running with the football little more then head coach Ron Rivera is comfortable with (40 times for 161 yards). What’s got to be upsetting for the Panthers is the fact that they haven’t been able to run the ball from scrimmage all that well, averaging just 3.4 yards per attempt as a team. And Newton’s three touchdown runs are the only ones they have.
The Bears have gone with Trubisky, the second overall pick in this year’s draft, in their last two games, and he has brought a little bit of spark to the offense, although he’s only thrown for 241 yards. After the ether wears off, you have to wonder whether his insertion has more than a placebo effect. But the Bears did score a victory on the road last week against the Baltimore Ravens, winning 27-24 in overtime.
Chicago did not allow an offensive touchdown last week, but they did allow three touchdowns on special teams, and that is something that has to cause headaches for head coach John Fox. If you’re talking about something that was really encouraging, it has to be Jordan Howard’s 167 yards on the ground, and the Bears really “fed” him, as he carried the ball 36 times. There was a spectacular 53-yard run in overtime that obviously helped the cause.
