Mariota had to sit out again against Miami, while Matt Casell played, but then he came back against the Colts and threw for 306 yards. Of course, it helped that he had the support of a strong running game, led by his fellow Heisman Trophy winner, Derrick Henry, who ran for a 72-yard touchdown and had 131 yards on the ground overall. This is the way the Titans would like to play the game; they don’t have a lot of great downfield receiving threats, but they do have a very reliable tight end in Delanie Walker for the short-range stuff, and there is some upside, if they can get some more out of first-round draft pick Corey Davis, who has only seven catches thus far.
The Browns sat down DeShone Kizer for last week’s game against Houston, giving the start to Kevin Hogan instead. Even so, head coach Hue Jackson said that this is not necessarily indicative of a kind of the future Kizer had with the team. Hogan imploded somwhat, so Kizer is back at the helm. His numbers are not impressive; he’s got only 51% completions, which is disastrous in this day and age, and just three touchdown passes with nine interceptions. Yes, he is struggling, even more so then a lot of rookie quarterbacks, especially one that was drafted as high as the second round. But without a lot of weaponry around him, his fate is almost doomed.
What will the Browns do? The running game, which Jackson considered to be critical at the beginning of the season, has really fizzled with Isaiah Crowell averaging only 3.4 yards a pop. And running back Duke Johnson is by far the top receiver on this team, and he’s actually done a heck of a job, catching 26 passes for 269 yards. Wide receivers are no threat at all on this club, and injuries did not help. At least last season they had Terrelle Pryor, who had over thousand yards. Now this team is converting less than 30% of the time on third down.
Cleveland has led in a game only once the entire season, and over the last 23 games, they have 22 straight-up defeat sand are 5-18 against the pointspread. But they simply must get some pressure on Mariota, who has thrown the ball 142 times and been sacked only thrice.
