The Eagles let the Giants scored 24 points in the fourth quarter last Sunday, but then, faced with the choice between throwing a Hail Mary pass or kicking a seemingly impossible field-goal on the game’s final play, they turned to their rookie kicker, Jake Elliott, and his 61-yarder gave Philadelphia a 27-24 victory. The Eagles are now 2-1 on the season, with their only loss taking place against the Kansas City Chiefs. Carson Wentz, the second pick in last year’s NFL Draft, continues to progress, as he averages seven yards per attempt with 62% accuracy. However, he’s been sacked 11 times, so he still has to make decisions more quickly. Against the Giants had 176 yards and a touchdown pass.
The Chargers lost a couple of heartbreakers in the first couple of weeks, to the Denver Broncos and Miami Dolphins, but were beaten rather soundly by the Chiefs last week (24-10). And it wasn’t a red-letter day for Philip Rivers either, as he threw three interceptions, two of which were returned back for touchdowns.
The Eagles did suffer some bad news last Wednesday, as Darren Sproles was declared out for the season with a torn ACL, and he broke his arm as well. What that does is subtract someone who could take spot carries from the running back position and also catch passes out of the backfield, which would normally be a great asset for Wentz. So now it is time for LeGarrette Blount to step up and become the workhorse he was acquired to be. He’s got only 113 rushing yards in the first three games, however, and that is not the best way to complement his quarterback.
Zach Ertz continues to be a reliable option at tight end, catching 21 passes thus far. And everything has been okay as far as Alshon Jeffery is concerned; the off-season acquisition, who played last year for the Chicago Bears, is averaging over 13 yards a catch after a horrific pre-season.
