Bengals vs Giants – CJ’s Take:
The Giants have a problem, however, in that they are still not running the football with a whole lot of effectiveness. In fact, whichever way you want to spin it, they are last in the National Football League in that category, having topped 78 yards only once. Meanwhile, the Bengals have come alive in that regard, with 423 yards over their last two games. And coming out of their bye week, they think this is the kind of thing that can serve to protect quarterback Andy Dalton a little better. Dalton has sustained 25 sacks, which is more than he had all of last season. Yet, the coaching staff has concentrated on calling out the defense, from who it has demanded better performance.
The Giants have gotten exactly that out of their own stop unit, as they have intercepted six passes in the last three games (four of those against the Rams and Case Keenum in London). They are getting healthier in the secondary, but frankly, they have not been happy with what they have gotten out of first-round pick Eli Apple, who was benched before the last game. What they DO like, though, is that Landon Collins has been emerging as a force.
Cincinnati ranks 25th in the NFL in terms of yardage allowed, and that has prompted defensive coordinator Paul Guenther to declare that personnel changes might indeed be coming. He was not specific about it, but it is no secret that the Bengals need to see more coming from defensive end Michael Johnson, who has just a sack and a half this season. To help the pass rush, the team reached out and re-acquired Wallace Gilberry. But there is “leadership,” if you want to call it that, from the likes of linebacker Vontaze Burfict and cornerback PacMan Jones.
The Giants’ stop unit is something of a paradox. Yes, they permitted 443 yards against Philadelphia in last week’s victory, but they stepped up and made the plays they had to when it really counted. On an overall basis, they have really not gotten to opposing quarterbacks enough, though the consensus is that they have the capability to do just that. VietBet patrons can see that they have certainly done a good job against the ground attack of the opposition, holding them to 3.6 yards per attempt. And a great deal of credit for that has to go to “Snacks” Harrison, who was acquired as a free agent (having played for the Jets last year) and may be on his way to a Pro Bowl season.
The Bengals have obviously had some time to reflect on what they are doing, because they made the trip to London two weeks ago and had the 27-27 tie with the Washington Redskins, then got the next week off. But they have some trends they are going to have to overcome here. For one thing, they have gone six straight road games without covering the football pointspread. And for another, they are 5-15 ATS as a road team on Monday Night Football, for what it’s worth.
Next up for both teams:
- Cincinnati home to Buffalo Sunday, November 20
- New York home to Chicago Sunday, November 20
