It was a very disappointing season for both of these squads in the 2015 season. The Browns went through another head coach, as they fired Mike Pettine and hired Hue Jackson to take his place. They also had to say goodbye to former Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel, who could not curb his off- field behavior. That was a huge disappointment, but they had brought in the new regime, and reached out for another Heisman Trophy winner who has had his own troubles along the way. Robert Griffin III was a rookie sensation with the Washington Redskins, and since then has had an up-and-down career. He was completely out of place in the West Coast offense employed by Jay Gruden in the nation’s capital, and sat on the bench for the entire 2015 campaign. Now he is getting a second chance to show what he can do.
The Eagles were expected to start this season with Sam Bradford at the controls, but Minnesota, which lost quarterback Teddy Bridgewater for the year with an injury, made an offer that was too good to pass up, and Bradford was off to the Twin Cities. So Philadelphia decided it was time to elevate rookie Carson Wentz, the #2 overall draft pick, to the starting job. He has not had a lot of snaps in the pre-season, so he’ll have to adapt quickly.
Does Griffin have a heck of a lot to work with? Well, Josh Gordon, who would be his best wide receiver, is suspended for the first four games. The rushing attack is rather weak, as Isaiah Kroll is the “feature” back, and really, the most reliable target is tight and Gary Barnidge, who caught 79 passes for 1043 yards last season.
On defense, this Cleveland unit needs a lot of improvement. They allowed 4.5 yards per carry, 7.9 yards per pass attempt, and in the secondary they yielded 34 touchdown passes with only 11 interceptions and 29 sacks.
Regardless, if VietBet patrons know this is going to be a challenge for Wentz, who has missed much of training camp with a broken rib. He only started two years at North Dakota State, although he led that team to a national title in FCS action. Yes, the learning curve will be big, but remember that Wentz ran a pro-style offense in college, making changes at the line of scrimmage and even calling his own plays in a two-minute drill.
Many of the moves made by Chip Kelly, the departed head coach, have been erased, as Doug Petersen, a former assistant with Andy Reid, takes over the head job. The new defensive coordinator is Jim Schwartz, who has a sterling reputation in that position. This Eagle defense forced eleven takeaways in the preseason, and they will use a lot of people to put pressure on the passer. There is a strong possibility that both of these single-callers will have their work cut out for them.
That’s why one of the ways we are going to go, as we proceed with the Charles Jay “Bet the Board” Challenge at VietBet, is to go UNDER the total of 41 points.
