For the Georgia State Panthers, it is a tremendous accomplishment to make it to a bowl game; after all, this is a young the program, at least as far as Division I participation is concerned, and they had gone into this season losing 23 of their previous 24 games. San Jose State went just 5-7 straight-up on the season (7-5 ATS), but they got a bowl invitation because, frankly, there were not enough teams with winning records to fill up all the available spots. This is a team that can bring some very credible fundamentals to the table, including the ability to defend the pass, as only one team in the nation allowed fewer yards per game. It must be noted that Georgia State is not a running team, averaging only 103 yards per game.
This, believe it or not, is one of three bowl games that will be played in this stadium, so the Orlando venue will get quite a workout. It would be much better for Georgia State if they were one of those teams that could grind you out with a rushing attack, but as we mentioned, that just isn’t the case. The Spartans have been VERY soft against the run, allowing 5.2 yards per carry, including big chunks to teams like Oregon State and Hawaii, who had a combined 5-20 record between them.

As it is, San Jose State will present quite a challenge for Georgia State quarterback Nick Arbuckle, who was sixth in the nation in passing yards (with 4160) and had seven straight games with 300 or more yards to close out the season. Arbuckle has great targets, including Penny Hart, who had 1095 receiving yards, and Robert Davis, who fell just below 1000. This is a team that was very efficient on third down, converting 45.5% of the time, but San Jose State was even better, with a 48.5% conversion rate which ranked 10th in the nation.
