Alabama Can’t Afford Letup Against Arkansas
By Charles Jay
Perhaps it was a surprise to some people, but most analysts of the NCAA football odds had to be very impressed with the way the Alabama Crimson Tide carved up the Georgia Bulldogs like a Thanksgiving turkey last week. That almost made up for the extremely disappointing loss to Ole Miss that had come a couple of weeks before it. But this is no time for letting up, or getting caught reading press clippings – not if ‘Bama wants to be a serious contender for a berth in the national championship playoff. They could have a serious challenge on their hands on Saturday night when they play host to the Arkansas Razorbacks in an SEC matchup that begins at 7 PM ET at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa.

Last time they played at home, the Tide committed five turnovers and also got riddled some by Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly (nephew of Jim) in a 43-37 loss. Sure, that was a setback, but it came relatively early, which means there is time to recover. And recover they did in Athens, as they led 24-3 at the half and cruised to a 38-10 blowout over Georgia, which is not accustomed to winning big games. Now they are ranked eighth in the Associated Press poll and 10th in the Coaches’ poll.
Has Arkansas’ season been a disappointment? You bet it has been. Consider that this is a team that shut out LSU and Ole Miss and scored a blowout win over Texas in their bowl game. They also dropped a heart-breaking 14-13 decision to Alabama last season after being blown out 52-0 in EACH of the previous two years. The Hogs began the season in the Top 25, but lost consecutive games to Toledo, Texas Tech and Texas A&M. They rebounded nicely last week with a road win at Tennessee. And they have covered six of their last seven games as a road underdog.

Last week the Tide intercepted Georgia quarterbacks three times, and turned things into a nightmare for Greyson Lambert, who had gone into the game as the NCAA’s #3 QB on the passing efficiency list. Alabama quarterback Jake Coker stayed out of trouble, and only had to throw the ball 16 times (though those passes accounted for 190 yards).
Coker’s stats, to be perfectly honest, are not going to blow anybody away. He has hit 57% of his throws but has been picked off four times. For the Tide to really roll it has to jump on board with Derrick Henry, who is averaging 6.1 yards a carry with nine touchdowns. He held his own in last week’s duel with fellow Heisman Trophy candidate Nick Chubb of Georgia, rushing for 148 yards and a touchdown. For those keeping track, Henry is +2000 to win the Heisman, according to the NCAA football odds at Vietbet, where you can enjoy reduced juice wagering, as well as the convenience of being able to make ALL of your deposits using Bitcoin!
