NBA Odds – For Wizards, Its Now Or Never
By Charles Jay
Paul Pierce probably doesn’t have many regrets about taunting the Atlanta Hawks’ bench after hitting a crucial three-point shot to put his Washington Wizards ahead by one point with a 8.3 seconds left in Wednesday night’s Game 5. But there is no question that the 17-year-veteran ate his words, as Al Horford went up aggressively to get a rebound and put the ball back to put the Hawks ahead for good in the 82-81 Atlanta victory that placed this year’s #1 East seed up three games to two. And Game 6 goes back to the nation’s capital, as it will get underway at 7 PM ET at the Verizon Center.

It had to be back-breaking for the Wizards to blow a nine point lead late in the contest as the Hawks went on a heroic 14-0 run. In a sense, they wasted an emotional boost from the return of point guard John Wall, who braved the pain from five non-displaced fractures in his left hand and turned in over 37 minutes of play.
In the NBA odds that have been established on this game by the people at Vietbet, the Wizards are the slight favorites to stay alive in the series:
Washington Wizards -2.5
Atlanta Hawks +2.5
Over 197 points -110
Under 197 points -110
This was one of those slow, grind-it-out games that typify a lot of playoff series. But it did not get physical to the point where there were many free throws taken; in fact, there were only 27 attempts from the charity stripe between the two teams, which is in stark contrast, for example, with the series between the Houston Rockets and the Los Angeles Clippers, in which the Clippers attempted 63 free throws in one game, while Houston went for 64 in another.
Atlanta has to get a better handle on the basketball if they are going to close this series out on Friday night. They turned the ball over 25 times in a Game 5, including seven times by point guard Jeff Teague. Vietbet patrons saw Dennis Schroder come into the game in the latter stages and give this team an energy boost, but Schroder was only 3-12 from the field and committed four turnovers. These mistakes are not going to leave Atlanta a lot of room for victory.
They were fortunate that the Wizards were able to hit only 37.5% from the field. As for Wall, the results were mixed; he scored 15 points and handed out seven assists, but he also turned the ball over six times. So you can say, in a way, that sloppy play also contributed to the low score. That is something for analysts of the NBA odds to take into account. But if the Hawks can exhibit their usual ball movement without butter-fingers, they have a chance to get a day or two of extra rest before they would have to play the Cleveland Cavaliers in the East finals.
