In MLB news, Jon Lester gave up only one hit through 8 innings Saturday afternoon for the Boston Red Sox in their second home game against the Oakland Athletics. Lester struck out 15 batters in the second straight pitching gem for the Sox, who had their only struggles in the game in the top half of the ninth inning. Lester also walked just two batters.
Sunday dawns for the Red Sox as a day where the team can both earn their first three-game win streak of the season and get back to a .500 record if they can sweep the Athletics with one more winning performance. Saturday, the Red Sox bats came alive, scoring at least five runs for the third game in a row. Over the course of the season so far, the Sox dropped five games already by scoring just one run and were shut out by the Milwaukee Brewers on April 6th.
Perhaps helping to bolster the fantastic pitching effort of Lester by taking the pressure off early, Jonny Gomes hit a grand slam 371 feet to get the game started in the first inning. A 420-foot moon shot over the bullpens by David Ortiz in the third inning and a 375-foot homer by David Ross in the 4th capped off the Red Sox scoring. These insurance runs made the Athletics’ mini-rally in the ninth inning a little less tense. The A’s scored their only three runs of the game before Koji Uehara stepped in and put out the fire to earn his 7th save of the season.
Sunday the Red Sox will send their only starting pitcher with a winning record to the mound. Though many experts never could have predicted it before the season started, John Lackey (4-2, 3.83 ERA, 39 Strikeouts) is slowly morphing into Boston’s top ace. He’ll have a great chance to move to 5-2 tomorrow against the 0-3 Tommy Milone, who comes in with a 5.86 ERA.
