2019 NCAA Tournament Odds – CJ’s Take on Florida State vs Gonzaga in Sweet 16 Showdown:
Florida State won last year’s encounter in the Sweet Sixteen by a 75-60 score, and that put a halt to the 16-game winning streak of the Bulldogs. However, this year Gonzaga comes in with a team that was #1 in the nation for several weeks. They did indeed suffer a disappointing loss to Saint Mary’s in the West Coast Conference tournament final, but they still got the top seed in the West region. Thus far they have beaten Fairleigh Dickinson and Baylor, but perhaps those are not great barometers as to how they match up against FSU, which appeared totally dominant in last weekend’s 90-62 victory over Murray State and star point guard Ja Morant.
One thing about the Seminoles’ head coach, Leonard Hamilton, is that he often has his team peaking at the right time, and this could be such a situation. Florida State does not have glittering numbers on offense, but they have speed, athleticism and size. And those are some of the things that could create a troublesome matchup for the ‘Zags.
While Gonzaga holds the ball only for an average of 14.6 seconds on offense, which is the sixth lowest amount of time in the country, they definitely make their opponents work the ball on the other end of the floor. Only two teams have forced the other team into spending more time on the clock on average than Mark Few’s team (19.1 seconds). This does not necessarily disadvantage Florida State, which believes it has the big people inside to maximize any matchup situation. Yes, Gonzaga has very productive big men, when you consider the talents of 6-8 Brandon Clarke, 6-10 Killian Tillie (who missed last year’s game between these two with a hip pointer) and 6-8 Rui Hachimura, but the Seminoles counter with man mountains in 6-10 Mfiondu Kabengele (12.9 points per game, 5.7 rebounds) and 7-4 Christ Koumadje (5.6 rebounds per contest). Both of these guys swat away shots with plenty of aplomb.
Gonzaga is one of the straightest shooting teams in the country, leading the nation in Effective Field Goal Percentage of 59.7%, averaging 89 points per game and being the most accurate team inside the two-point arc at 62.2%. But perhaps that gets upset by an FSU defense that can provide quite a roadblock underneath.
A key player here is going to be Terence Mann, the 6-7 swingman who had 18 points in last year’s game. This season, on a team that was not necessarily as efficient defensively as Thursday night’s opponent, he has the highest individual Offensive Rating on the squad (120.5). But with FSU, which is now 16-2 in its last 18 games, the whole might be greater than the sum of its parts. And they certainly are battle-hardened, going through the Atlantic Coast Conference, which produced no less than THREE #1 seeds in this Big Dance. So there might be a lot of room inside this pointspread for them.
