The Tennessee Titans had looked like a team that might be on the verge, and they broke through to a certain extent in the 2017 season, making the playoffs and executing a rather exceptional comeback against the Kansas City Chiefs in an AFC wild-card game. Yet that was not good enough for management, which bid adieu to Mike Mularkey and hired former New England Patriots linebacker Mike Vrabel as head coach. Remember that Marcus Mariota did not have an exceptional season at quarterback, so if he can reach previous levels, there is definite room for improvement. The Titans say goodbye to DeMarco Murray, the former NFL rushing champion who has retired, and it was probably their thinking that they could get along with former Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry as the featured back. They went ahead and made the acquisition of Dion Lewis, the former New England Patriot who can not only run out of the backfield but is also superb at catching passes. So they have found their third-down guy.
Backups at the quarterback position will include Blaine Gabbert, Jacksonville’s former first-round choice who has bounced around a little since then, and rookie Luke Falk, who flourished in Mike Leach’s wide-open scheme at Washington State. There is probably a pretty good chance that they’ll improve on their #23 ranking in offensive production.
If there is some kind of weakness in this attack, it’s that the wide receivers are not all that explosive. They are hoping for some progress out of Cory Davis, last year’s first-round pick, and as usual, tight end Delaney Walker is going to be a primary option for Mariota to look for. But there are no impact newcomers.
The biggest addition on defense has to be cornerback Malcolm Butler, who made that game-saving play for New England against Seattle in the Super Bowl, and subsequently reached the Pro Bowl, only to fall out of favor with Bill Belichick, who benched him in last year’s Super Bowl, which was a real shocker to everyone who was watching.
One dilemma for this team is replacing right tackle Jack Conklin; that is, if that indeed needs to be done. Conklin had to undergo knee surgery and so his physical status has to be closely watched. Training camp started with him on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. This is an All-Pro we are talking about, so if he is absent for any length of time, that is going to be felt.
One thing you have to admire about this franchise is that the firing of Mularkey indicates they weren’t content just with winning their first playoff game in 14 years. They want to reach higher. So the question is whether Vrabel, whose have a lot of experience in winning situations, can take this program to a new level.
