When you examine a lot of those early games, there were several close losses, including five straight by a field goal or less. So you knew that San Francisco was relatively close. They made the trade for Garoppolo during the season and then hid him from the media while he absorbed Kyle Shanahan’s playbook. During this time they used journeyman Brian Hoyer and rookie CJ Beathard at quarterback, with low levels of success. When Garoppolo came out, he came out swinging; San Francisco won five games in a row, three of them against playoff teams. And now there is a new level of confidence around this camp.
They have also added some personnel to support Jimmy G, who signed a five-year, $137 million contract to stay with the team. Shanahan is regarded as one of the brightest offensive minds in the league, and so we will see what happens as coach and quarterback have a full season together.
Leading rusher Carlos Hyde, who had 938 yards last season, left for Cleveland, and the Niners hope that Jerick McKinnon, who got significant playing time in Minnesota, can pick up the slack. Weston Richburg, who was with the New York Giants last season, comes in to be the starting center. And San Francisco has very high hopes for its first-round draft pick, Notre Dame’s Mike McGlinchey, who will be the starting right tackle. Jimmy G will have another receiver to throw to, in the person of second-round draft pick Dante Pettis out of Washington.
San Francisco gave up 352 yards per game, ranking them 24th in the NFL, and there have been wholesale changes on that side of the ball. Eric Reed, a starting safety, became a free agent and he is the subject of much controversy, because of his position with regard to the national anthem. Defensive lineman Aaron Lynch is also gone. But the 49ers drafted six defensive players, the best of which might be third-rounder Fred Warner, a linebacker from BYU.
And the newcomer who has gotten the most headlines is, of course, Richard Sherman, the All-Pro cornerback who left Seattle and must recover from an Achilles injury. If he can do that, he can take away one side of the field from an opponent. At the very least, he adds a certain toughness and swagger that this stop unit could really use.
A lot of people are “over the moon” on the 49ers this season, and things do indeed look a lot more promising with Garoppolo at the controls. But keep in mind that there are still some holes in this team, and the defense is a work in progress. We don’t expect them to seriously challenge the Rams, and they will have all they can handle to be out Arizona in Seattle in the NFC West.
