There are three things that seem to be certain in this world – death, taxes and the fact that the New England Patriots will win the AFC East. Once again they are going to be a solid favorite, and once again there is the opportunity for bill Belichick and Tom Brady to retool at the receiver position. They are going to have to do that out of necessity, as they will be missing one of their top options for the first four games of the season.

After the very disappointing Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, the Patriots made some changes. There are a few absences well worth mentioning. Malcolm Butler, who was the center of so much controversy as he did not play from scrimmage during the Super Bowl, is gone, and he is now a member of the Tennessee Titans. And Matt Patricia, who had served as coordinator for seven years, moved on to take the head job with the Detroit Lions. They will go without an official defensive coordinator, with Brian Flores making the play calls (not an unprecedented move for Bill Belichick). But this defense will survive, as it was fifth-best in the NFL in points allowed (18.5 per game). One of the noticeable additions is Adrian Clayborn, who as a member of the Atlanta Falcons last season, pretty much terrorized Dak Prescott in one of those games Ezekiel Elliott had to sit out.
Dion Lewis will no longer be available as a dual-threat running back, as he moved on to Tennessee, but the Pats had James White to assume that role anyway. Losing Brandin Cooks was tough, because he did provide a long-distance threat for Brady, and the loss of Danny Amendola (who went to the Dolphins) is particularly painful because New England will also be without the services of Julius Edelman for the first four games of the season due to a suspension.
Added to the mix now are Cordarelle Patterson, who is best known as a kick return are and has never really been fully utilized as a wide receiver, and Jordan Matthews, a wideout who comes over from Buffalo. Also keep an eye on sixth-round draft choice Braxton Berrios, a sure-handed “Smurf” receiver in the mold of Amendola and Edelman, as well as Wes Welker. By the way, he returns punts too. Sony Michel was drafted in the first round out of Georgia, and he could be a potential game-breaker. Jeremy Hill is a big back who played for the Cincinnati Bengals last season, but he has underachieved in the last couple of years. Nate Solder, a fixture on the defensive line for years, has now departed to the New York Giants, so the Pats now have to plug that hole.
