Sean McVay, who became the youngest head coach in modern NFL history, looked like a miracle worker as he helped to bring Jared Goff along. Goff seemed stagnated and lost under Jeff Fisher’s previous regime, but last season he completed 62% of his passes with an eight-yard average (second in the NFC) and 28 touchdowns with only seven interceptions. That was incredible progress from the youngster who was the first pick in the 2016 draft. Todd Gurley stayed healthy and was a legitimate MVP candidate, accumulating 1305 yards on the ground and 780 in receptions, scoring 19 touchdowns. So a lot of the elements were in place, and now the Rams try to take it to a new level.
Yes, they lost wide receivers Tavon Austin and Sammy Watkins, but if you analyze that for a moment, Austin has just not been real productive for them, while Watkins didn’t fit in and seems to be an injury concern. But they did an upgrade by adding deep threat Brandin Cooks, who played with New England last season and probably did his best work with the New Orleans Saints. We know that it is probably a lot to ask of Gurley to have a repeat of his 2017 performance, but anything close to that will be good enough. The Rams don’t have to lead the league in scoring again to be a legitimate Super Bowl contender; that’s because the defense is ready to take a major step up.
Management made a big splash in the off-season, signing a number of name players. Ndomukong Suh gained a reputation as one of the NFL’s best defensive linemen when he was with Detroit, and he was pretty good in Miami too, although he probably needed a change in scenery. He is an ornery type, but also capable of great things, and teaming with another All-Pro like Aaron Donald upfront, they can bust up a lot of running games.
The Rams acquired not one, but TWO shutdown corners, as they picked up Marcus Peters, formerly of the Kansas City Chiefs, and Aqib Talib, who was with the Denver Broncos last season. Both of these players have been All-Pros, although both of them have been a little erratic as far as their personality is concerned. However, if they get the job done on the field, this secondary is very dynamic. And for some support, they also added Sam Shields, who has had concussion problems the last couple of seasons but did perform at a Pro Bowl level for the Green Bay Packers when he was healthy.
By any measure, the Rams have improved their personnel greatly. Remember that they also have perhaps the best defensive coordinator in the business in Wade Phillips. Everything seems to be moving in the right direction for this franchise as they are couple of years away from opening their mega-stadium at the site of Hollywood Park. And who knows – they may be able to bring a Super Bowl championship – or two – with them.
