2018 Final Four Odds – Kansas Gets Big Effort From Newman
Coach Bill Self may not have had his most talented team this season with the Kansas Jayhawks, but it might be one of his most industrious. And now they are on the verge of making it to the national championship game. All they have to do is beat the Villanova Wildcats, who have the top scoring team in the country, perhaps the best player in the country, and have won nine games in a row. Okay, that’s a tough task. So we’ll see how they handle it, on Saturday at 8:49 PM ET at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

2018 Final Four Odds: CJ’s Take on Villanova vs Kansas:
Kansas certainly has to be given credit for being one of the most consistently excellent teams in the country. They have won at least a share of the Big 12 regular season title for fourteen years running, and to give you an idea of how strong the Big 12 was THIS season, there was a chance, a week ago, that we could have seen three teams from that conference (Texas Tech and Kansas State as well) in the Final Four.
So suffice it to say that the record of 31-7 (2016 against the points) is no fluke. And they went toe-to-toe with an extremely talented Duke team last weekend and came out of it with a thrilling 85-81 overtime victory, which was highlighted by a rather superhuman performance.
Many people who follow the game are already aware that Devonte’ Graham, Kansas’ senior guard, is one of the premier players in the nation, and the numbers bear that out (17.2 ppg, 7.3 apg, 40% triples). He deserves his All-America status, but his backcourt mate has emerged as an even bigger threat in the latter stages of the campaign. Malik Newman was a McDonald’s All-American who went to Mississippi State, then transferred to Kansas after his freshman year. he averaged 14 points this season, but he has stepped up greatly, tallying 22 ppg over his last seven, and that included 32 against Duke, which included ALL thirteen in the extra session.
This gives Kansas a backcourt that can compete with anybody. And when you can add people in your lineup like Lagerald Vick (12.2 ppg, 37.8% threes) and Svi Mykhailiuk (44.7% from long range), you have the makings of a team that can definitely match Villanova shot-for-shot. The difference – on paper, at least – is what happens when either team misses its shots. Villanova got twenty offensive rebounds against Texas Tech in its Elite Eight game, and Kansas is WAY down the list when it comes to defensive rebounding percentage – 290th, in fact. So that makes it all the more critical Kansas has seven-foot center Udoka Azubuike on the floor. Not only would he be the best shot-blocker on the floor, he makes 77% of his shots. But he has played more than 30 minutes only a handful of times, is coming off an MCL injury and has fouled out in each of the last two games. Expect Villanova to attack the basket and challenge him early.
