Tyrod Taylor, who had some mobility and minimized mistakes, has left and is now a member of the Cleveland Browns. There is no question that Buffalo will eventually be going with Josh Allen, their first-round draft pick out of Wyoming, but the question is when. AJ McCarron, the former Cincinnati Bengals who has been waiting for his opportunity to be a starter, will have that now, at least in the early going. Head coach Sean McDermott will likely make his decision regarding the quarterback transition in relation to what the Bills’ chances are to make the playoffs at some given point in time. If they look like a contender with McCarron, Allen’s debut will likely wait a while. But if they are in the tank early, expect the rookie.

And if Allen becomes the starting quarterback here, we’d be looking for a lot of growing pains. He is not close to the point where he is NFL-ready when it comes to reading defenses are reacting to a pass rush. And he doesn’t have a lot of help in there.

Three offensive line starters are gone, and that includes Richie Incognito, who retired. Incognito, who of course was caught up in that infamous scandal when he was with the Dolphins, made a nice comeback and played at Pro Bowl level for Buffalo, so that’s a big loss. He was particularly strong blocking for the run.

First-round draft pick Tremane Edmonds will certainly help out on defense, and there were a couple of key additions, including defensive lineman Star Lotulelei from Carolina and Vontae Davis, the corner from Indianapolis. Both of those players have Pro Bowl capability.

We’re not sure what they’re going to do on offense, however. They were ranked 29th overall in that category last year, and it does not look like they are going to improve all that much. The Bills benefited from a +9 turnover ratio last season, and those things have a way of evening themselves out. Besides, much of that has to attributed to the play of taylor, who may not have been a guy to stretch the field out but only tossed four footballs into enemy hands. The transition at quarterback, particularly if it involves a rookie, wil produce a much different result. This could be a season not only of regression in Western New York.
